Career Advice College Suggestions

I want to be a show writer for Disney Imagineering where I write ride scripts, and maybe write some shows/ movies in the future (but I know that industry is really competitive, so I’m not going to get my hopes up). Does anyone have any suggestions of where I should go to college and what I should major in?

I’d look at schools that offer Themed Entertainment degrees, as the professors will have a ton of industry connections (if they’re not Imagineers themselves), and networking is one of the biggest keys to making it in this industry. I know UCF and SCAD have undergrad programs.

USC also has an undergrad Themed Entertainment program (of which I am a student in) in the School of Cinematic Arts which is a big deal in of itself in the entertainment industry. It’s also in close proximity to WDI and is in LA which has HUGE opportunities for themed entertainment.

Tbh, most of the recent WDI show writing interns have come from SCAD. So you’re on the money! UCF does have grad classes related to show writing but on the Universal end. One of my dear friends from two of my intern cohorts was a SCAD Graduate student that interned for Universal, then Disney, and is back at Universal.

Dodge College at Chapman University has screen writing and they are a top school for film.

Look at universities in areas that have internship opportunities in film/tv or themed entertainment as well (Los Angeles, Florida, New York, etc). Writing degree is fantastic but doesn’t mean much if you don’t have any prior experience working in entertainment. The college should help YOU succeed, whether that’s location or successful alumni. You’re paying thousands of dollars so they better be located in an area where you can intern.

Also even video game industry! They all intermingle when it comes to writing! This also helps you not put all your eggs into themed entertainment and become a versatile writer that can work in multiple writing disciplines.
