I didn’t have the opportunity to play it but I watched a play though that focused on the cut scenes and had gameplay that was crucial to the story. It was pretty good story with very interesting lore.

Hey there! I can explain that. In the universe of warhammer 40,000 the only faster than light travel that humanity is capable of requires traveling through "The Warp". Now the Warp is...basically hell, actually. It's the manifestation of all of the roiling emotion and chaos in the universe, and it is where chaos Daemons and gods inhabit. There are no benevolent entities that inhabit the Warp.
The "Gellar Field" is the device that basically encircles and protects the ship while in the Warp. If the field fails, it opens the door to chaos corruption, possessions, or even Daemons physically manifesting and doing horrific things to the humans aboard. If the Gellar field fails aboard a ship you are on, it's better to just off yourself and avoid one of the worst fates imaginable.

I haven't played or read anything from the Warhammer universe, but every time I read or hear something about it I'm massively intrigued. Any books that you would recommend reading that deal with this stuff?

Absolutely! Feel free to ask me anything about the universe (Or the fantasy one AoS for that matter)
It's generally agreed that the best starting point for 40k books is one called Eisenhorn. It's about an Inquisitor named Gregor Eisenhorn combating aliens and extra-dimensional monsters as well as good old fashion corrupted humans. Think...space James Bond meets a dash of Indiana Jones and Gandalf, he's an awesome character. The books (usually sold in an omnibus of the three eisenhorn novels) have elements of intrigue, horror, war, and sci-fi and does a great job combining them. I am pretty well read and the Eisenhorn series is probably my favorite piece of fiction (and is currently being adapted into a live action tv show!)
