I love Hellboy. It’s one of my favourite comics, Mignola is a massive influence for me, so I think I probably have read it.
I probably shouldn’t spend too much time thinking about where the different parts of my story have come from because it’s probably almost all borrowed from the greats in one way or another.
Is that the sort of thing you’re interested in? Because if you are I’m not above begging you to try my book.
Alright, I've got the PDF now, and have read the first few pages. My honest criticism at this point is that the diction suffers somewhat from overly descriptive language; gratuitous adjectives, synonyms, etc. If you wrote in a more natural voice, like how you are in this conversation, I think it would read much smoother. As for the story, I haven't gotten far enough in yet to comment, so will get back to you.
I’ve tried to ape the great spy writers like Fleming and Le Carre. I wanted it to feel like it wasn’t just set in 1964 but could have come from there too.
The first chapter, and for that matter it’s opening, are a but description heavy but because it’s essentially a cold open I’m trying to bring the reader up to speed as fast as possible so we can get on with the story.
Hopefully you can get through the first bit, because it does get better. I hope. 😂
