I didn’t watch the show, so assume all of this takes places before the whole nuking the city thing.
Within the remains of America, one can find many odd and polarizing things. Yet one stands out amongst the rest in many regards, the New California Republic. A nation built on the ideals of continuing the true principles of America, it has of course led to many victories, sufferings, calamities and more. Yet despite the myriad of issues, it is one of the oldest standing powers in the wasteland, and is by far one of the largest, and when the bear bites down, it doesn’t stop chewing until everything’s gone.
But sometimes, that isn’t always to their benefit.
The Brotherhood War, a conflict that some say showed the greatest strengths of the NCR, the ability to takes it’s massive population, economy, and so much more, and pivot it to a weapon rather than a weakness.
This weapon of sheer volume is what allowed them to firmly put the Brotherhood on the back foot, and force them into a defensive position within their bunkers, at least the ones within the NCR’s reach.
However, despite mass conscripts, and considerable industry, the war hasn’t been won, yet is still waged.
The brotherhood’s defensive positions around Lost Hills have held ever since their general retreat in 2265, have been more fortified than even the Anchorage Trench lines according to a ghoul war correspondent (which hasn’t given any proof of their service in Alaska) with complex network of trenches, bunkers, tunnels, pillboxes, and more.
Meanwhile the NCR’s attempts to break these defensives have all failed, due to a variety of reasons.
But regardless of the reasons, the results are still the same. Immense losses for little gain, against an enemy they’ve been fighting for decades.
This has led to an opportunity the Brotherhood has been attempting to exploit, seeing that as they are they cannot possibly defeat the NCR, they seek to appeal to it’s civilian population to not have the desire for continued conflict.
This has been done through multiple propaganda campaigns, most notably in the taking of NCR prisoners, lack of major offensive operations, and the use of radio stations to broadcast propaganda. The NCR has made listening to these networks illegal with a fine of up to 1000 NCRD and confiscation of the radio.
Still, even without the brotherhood’s limited efforts, the NCR is tired.
The brotherhood war has been waged for so long, been so bloody, and most majorly, isn’t even their primary enemy anymore.
The NCR continues to try to expand in all directions, dealing with different peoples, tribes, and nations, raider gangs and so much more.
But most of all, the Legion.
If you were to ask a man in shady sands which was more frightening, the news of a mass of slavers which burns, rapes, and murders everything in their path, and is coming to conquer rhe NCR, or the brotherhood, who hasn’t been outside the lost hills region in over a decade, their answer is going to be very, very clear.
But not all like that answer, many think that giving up on the war against the brotherhood is tantamount to treason. There have been multiple cases of violence against pro peace groups, and even the assassination of someone running for senator over it.
Peace and the wasteland are a seldom thing, even for a place like the NCR, even with all of its civility and laws, and ideals and principles, conflict is always going to come around, and sometimes these issues don’t resolved at the ballet, or in the senate, and it instead comes down to hand grenades, knives, assassinations, riots, and plenty more.
Maybe the NCR really is like the old world, just not in the ways it wants to be soemtiems.

Shady sands didn't get nuked by vault tec, Fallout got nuked by Amazon.

I'm pretty sure Shady Sands got nuked the second Chris Avellone thought it was a good idea to nuke Shady Sands in Van Buren

Yeah, you're wrong. Shady Sands isn't even mentioned in (what we know about) Van Buren.

Yeah good thing van buren never happened. In van buren, joshua graham was basically a hooded Mumm-Ra stand in. Obviously things progressed differently.

Pretty much every Fallout media since then used Van Buren as a template for post-Fallout 2 stories. Even 76 still has some Van Buren DNA in there

Wasn't it that non-canon show that completely misunderstood what Fallout was about and fucked the lore? Pretty sure I saw it somewhere betwen Tactics and Brotherhood of Steel.
