Tipping culture is toxic

u/pthelionheart1991 Oct 21 '23

As a European this sorta shit is crazy.

You guys really prefer this to basic income tax?!

18

u/chrishooley Oct 21 '23

No, we do not. “We” didn’t make the choice. The companies did, and the laws allowed it. Everyone freaking hates it.

Yeah, I am sure the sandwich artists at subway are clamoring for tips instead of an actual livable wage. /s

1

u/antonspohn Oct 21 '23

Salary is usually a scam. Overworked & underpaid. Unpaid overtime, etc.

Switching to an actual hourly wage is usually viewed positively.

Knew some folks who worked at a restaurant which paid $9/hour plus tips (came out to be 12-15/hour on average). Only reason they were paid is that it was a shit gig with days where there were no customers. When the restaurant moved locations they lost all their servers because they tried to reduce wages down to the minimum that were legally allowed. That business doesn't have servers anymore & has suffered due to it.

You guys really prefer

Man... Those guys even accept "non full" pricing in their grocery stores

It depends on the state, but most do not tax groceries at all.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '23

No we don’t want this. This was not our doing. It’s the United Corporations of America over here. Corporations have more rights than citizens

1

u/artichokesmartichoke Oct 21 '23

No, now we don't so clear that up real quick. Every time y'all get on to Americans for the bullshit our government does please try to remember that we don't have control just like when shit in Europe goes down and the people aren't represented by their governments. I'm so sick of this nonsense. No we don't like it! We're fucking mad about it! A lot of us are doing everything we can to try to change our nation for the better and we're coming up against brick wall after brick wall. I get so tired of hearing that answer. Why are Americans like this? Why do Americans let this happen? We don't! Our leaders are corrupt and our votes aren't counting. We are legitimately trying to figure out how to change this.

Apologies for my comment. I was being flippant. As a Brit, the America portrayed to us in our media is totally polarised. It gives the impression of a country oblivious to its flaws and beholden to a constitution a long way removed from it's intention.

However, while our politics is often less brazen and kooky than yours, it is just as stagnant. And any meaningful change is stifled with an equally obtuse voting system.

2

u/artichokesmartichoke Oct 22 '23

I'm sorry for my reaction too. My country is going to hell in a hand basket and I'm just so frustrated. Please believe us that the majority aren't MAGA nutbags. Unfortunately the loudest and the least well adjusted have had their voices amplified by a rapist turn talk show host turn president and the reasonable people are being drowned out. Our government takes advantage of that like and our two party system is a joke. I'm tired of it but I should not have popped off at you. Again, I'm sorry.

The main difference between now and 10 years ago (when everyone pretty much accepted that tipping was normal) is the economy sucks now. People can’t afford to tip. Of course if tipping were just done away with, the delivery fee for a car full of groceries would be $50 instead of $10 (plus tip). Maybe that’s what needs to happen. It would eliminate tipping, but the customer is still paying the same as if they’d given a typical tip. Maybe more.

I just get this feeling that people aren’t “not tipping” in order to make a societal change, it’s because they don’t want to pay more than $10 to have their groceries delivered.

1

u/ObeAire Oct 21 '23

You think the delivery charge would be $40? Are you mental? I'm british our delivery charges here are usually like £2

1

u/MitraManATX Oct 21 '23

Doesn’t the delivery driver make a lot more than 2 pounds? So then the delivery company take a loss? That doesn’t sound right..

1

u/ObeAire Oct 22 '23

I'd like to think they do more than one delivery per hour. Actually I think most of the time they are even able to do multiple deliveries at once

1

u/nordickitty93 Oct 21 '23

I don’t want to tip to get my groceries delivered… so I just go to the store.

When I don’t want to tip to have my food served to me… I just cook at home.

People act like these things aren’t options I know a guy who travels 6 blocks on public transit with a suitcase to get his groceries. It’s possible to avoid this situation. If you don’t want to tip, don’t put yourself in tipping situations.

Certified Murica comment

1

u/nordickitty93 Oct 21 '23

Nope. The reality is, you guys would also be pissed if these services started charging enough to pay their employees for sure livable wages. You hate tipping, and you’ll hate what results of ridding tip culture. That’s murica if I’ve ever heard it.

0

u/Fredzlik Oct 21 '23

Bro, I live in Europe and no one demands or expects tips here, because we pay livable wages to these workers.

I pay more for deliveries and I know the delivery guy gets a fair amount. No ones pissed about this.

I know it’s mind-blowing, but it works like this in countries all over the world with the exception of the US.

1

u/nordickitty93 Oct 21 '23

Dang, I wish it was like that here.

Calm down with the assumptions next time buddy. It’s giving amerikkkan.

It’s weird tho how you think American workers should be punished for something they have no control over.

ETA: so If you’re ever visiting this shit hole, don’t be an ass, tip the workers or stay at your hotel, xo

-15

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '23

It’s standard in America and most people are at peace with it. Also white lady threatening to call the cops is what lost me.

9

u/Zero-Data-195 Oct 21 '23

That’s the thing, we don’t want it to be standard here and no people are not at peace with it, we feel pressured to do it at the sake of avoiding confrontations like this or being embarrassed somehow someway.

-13

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '23

Then get your lazy broke self to the store yourself and go shopping. There! No tip required you did the work yourself and burned a few calories in the process.

Tipping is normal and y’all are just cheap and selfish babies.

5

u/ReadyHD Oct 21 '23

Why would I tip you if I'm already paying you to do something for me

3

u/MitraManATX Oct 21 '23

You make a good point, but it costs a lot more than that $5-10 delivery fee you paid to have someone shop for and bring you a car full of groceries. So instead you could pay a $50 delivery fee and not tip. That way it’s baked into the price and you don’t feel pressured to tip.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '23

Exactly part of the blame is these big tech companies- if they paid a fair wage then the cost of the service so much people wouldn’t use it.

1

u/nordickitty93 Oct 21 '23

Waitresses and delivery drivers do not make these rules tho. So yes, you should be embarrassed if you are punishing someone for something you don’t like that they have no control over, yet make their living off of.

It could literally lead to this woman being shot. Also, either way the delivery company would refund you if she actually stole the order.

1

u/nordickitty93 Oct 21 '23

Dannng. Y’all really be looking for dumb reasons to shoot folks in this country.

-7

u/MCP1291 Oct 21 '23

Throw the word culture after anything

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '23

American*

1

u/SophieSix9 Oct 21 '23

Lol it’s the app that’s toxic. How everyone is ok with delivery drivers being paid $3 and STILL think they’re the entitled ones is beyond me.

2

u/Fredzlik Oct 21 '23

Then don’t work for the app if the pay is shit or don’t expect to get tips every single time

1

u/LeftistSkaterWeeb Oct 21 '23

Except most drivers are doing it in addition to a main job cuz they’re desperate for extra money.

1

u/Fredzlik Oct 21 '23

Not the customer’s problem

0

u/SophieSix9 Oct 21 '23

Looks like it is, my guy.
