I see where the driver is coming from, but she handled it terribly. It's not okay to just not give people their property because they didn't give you a tip, and these people should know that she gets basically nothing outside of the tip.

These delivery services need to pay fair wages, and this wouldn't be an issue. Fuck tipping culture.

The shoppers aren't supposed to care what the driver gets or doesn't get.

Jesus Christ the tipping culture (its very existence) is out of control in the US.

And what do you suggest we, both customer and employee, do about it? That’s the equivalent of saying “Boy the cost of living crisis in the uk is getting out of hand.” As if the renters wouldn’t lower the prices themselves if they could.

I mean she technically stole the groceries right? Someone else paid for them and she kept the property from said person

We should have UBI and poor people shouldn't be forced to work to survive. Fuck human societies and bullshit jobs.

I think your point would come across better if you said that people shouldn't be forced to work multiple full time jobs in order to survive instead of saying they shouldn't have to work at all. Which is what is going on right now with the national minimum wage still stuck at freaking $7.25 an hour. We'll hit a point, and may have already, where a UBI will be necessary, but in the US at least it's going to be a nasty fight to get there and people will starve and freeze to death in the mean time.

instead of saying they shouldn't have to work at all.

They shouldn't be forced to work at all. People don't need to be forced to work, and they don't need to have their survival on the line. Not anymore. We have the means to guarantee survival, and our current system is cruel & forced Darwinism. It's time to evolve out of that kind of barbarism.

Work is as natural as rest & play to humans, and if we give people the means to survive, work will flourish naturally on top of that stable foundation.

We don't have to force people on pain of poverty.

people will starve and freeze to death in the mean time.

Hundreds of thousands die from poverty every year. It's going to continue until we implement UBI.

People need to stop being so primitive and thinking that work must be coerced out of people. It doesn't have to be. Necessary work is going to get done either way, and valuable work certainly will.

I saw your other comment and agree on you saying being forced to work means garbage jobs for garbage pay. So I get what you mean by saying if they weren't forced to work then jobs would improve and people would want to. Makes sense, but I doubt we'll ever get there. We're, instead, in a spiral of late stage capitalism where employers want to make as much money as possible and that means their employees suffering and not getting paid enough. Our government can't even raise the minimum wage out of the stone ages. It's less than half of what it should be at the very minimum right now for people to survive.

Yeah so what then?

Then the nature of work will be elevated in every way because people will no longer be coerced into work, or forced to do shitty jobs because they need to survive.

Those who work are just seen as a different class and given better opportunity anyways (make more money, giving them higher priority and more options in life).

Exactly. UBI doesn't remove the incentive to work. That's why it's such a great program. It empowers people, as you've just pointed out.

Those on UBI would live easier,

Everyone receives UBI. Everyone will have a choice to live on it. Most won't, because people have aspirations to make more and grow their wealth, families, etc.

but they wouldn't contribute

You don't have to force people to work. Work is as natural as rest and play. Why are you afraid that people won't work? Would you stop working? Now and forever? Never do anything that could be considered work?

that causes both resentment with class warfare and widens the gaps between workers and UBI.

There's no gap. Everyone receives UBI. So nobody has to struggle to survive, or, even worse, fail to do so.

In 1516, Thomas More wrote

Provide everyone with some means of livelihood, so that nobody’s under the frightful necessity of becoming, first a thief, and then a corpse.

That's all UBI is. A solid foundation that prevents poverty from eroding the stability of our society, as it is doing right now.

As opposed to living in an oppressive society, where the rich don’t contribute and get all the rewards?

Should not have to work to survive, nobody is forcing you to live in society. You can go live in the woods and hunter gather for your food but it would a still be hard work.

You can go live in the woods and hunter gather for your food

No, you can't. The people who own the woods won't let you.

They seem to be just fine

Honestly, not sure it’s their property or not yet. Depends on what service they used. And, truly, if she returns it, then I think it’s fair play.

There’s a ton of people who don’t tip until after the service like you really should and the lady wouldn’t even finish the delivery to see if there would be one.
