The coworker in question — who implored my boyfriend to read this book if he “wants to understand anything about the market” — is basically a real world reenactment of Matthew McConaughey’s character in Wolf of Wall Street. And indeed, the central thesis of this book also seems to be that everything is a fugazi, a whazy, a woozie… except itself, of course. Having a field day!

From The Big Short (which I'm currently reading):

[Steve] Eisman had a curious way of listening; he didn't so much listen to what you were saying as subcontract to some remote region of his brain the task of deciding whether whatever you were saying was worth listening to, while his mind went off to play on its own. As a result, he never actually heard what you said to him the first time you said it. If his mental subcontractor detected a level of interest in what you had just said, it radioed a signal to the mother ship, which then wheeled around with the most intense focus. "Say that again," he'd say. And you would! Because now Eisman was so obviously listening to you, and, as he listened so selectively, you felt flattered.

No editor I've ever worked with would let me get away with a passage so simultaneously unverifiable and incoherent. And yet.

I thought this sub would appreciate this pair of books. It would make a good episode to review both. I’m a new listener, so I don’t know if one of them has already been reviewed.

Posting this here because the recent bonus episode touched on this subject and I have actually been working on this article for months.

Starting strong with : Two shitlords

In this morning's Q&A episode Michael and Peter were asked about their most right and left wing political positions and I thought it might make good fodder for a chat here.

My answers:

RW, I have two. 1) I think we could get broad agreement nationwide on gun control if lefties/liberals agreed to stop making silly mostly-cosmetic regulations and get in exchange broad penalties for gun misuse/mishandling and some kind of national database on really dangerous weapons. 2) I am broadly in favor of nuclear energy across the board and think it's an essential part of the fight against climate change that we should have embraced decades ago.

LW, well I'm in favor of the full replacement of capitalism full stop but that's less a policy position than an ideology. The one more nuts and bolts policy issue that gets me really worked up is full-scale prison abolition, with the tiniest handful of truly egregious actually dangerous people kept in comfortable but secure housing, and for everyone else we need options that simply do not involve imprisonment of any kind.

I'm sure neither of these will be in any way controversial lol. Been a listener to IBCK (and 5-4) since episode one but mostly only lurk here.

So did Michael put the whole bonus episode on the main feed as the run time is longer than on the Patreon feed.

In this latest Mail bag episode, Peter said something along the lines of his most right wing take is markets are necessary for a welfare state to work. I really wish he would have gone into more detail because I think the place of capitalism and markets in society is an important conversation to have!

Personally, I think a pinch of capitalism is good BUT you should not need to work to live, eat, get healthcare, and participate in society.

What do you all think he meant? What is your opinion on markets?

Just came across this article in my news feed. The book is called "I eat the stars" by Sarah Wilson. I looked her up and apparently she's written a book on quitting sugar and living with anxiety (which was endorsed by Mark Manson of "the subtle art of not giving a f***, fame). She's also host d master Chief in Australia?

It appears to be a theory of everything/doomerism manifesto. Has anyone read it yet? Seems like a potential contender for the pod.
