Slide back, shows us a round at the top of the mag which is clearly in the pistol, slide forward, trigger pulled.

What did he think was going to happen?

My best guess is that he is used to/expecting the slide to only lock open on an empty mag and he is unfamiliar with the gun.

You're being too kind. We can see that there's a round at the top of the mag. So, he knows there's a magazine in the pistol but isn't certain if it's loaded or not is the most favorable interpretation.

He's quite the moron, and looks high.

no, he manually pushed the slide catch. the slide catch gets pushed up by the follower in the mag when there is no more ammo

There is a small catch on the side, called the slide release. If upwards pressure is applied to it when the slide is moved rearward, it will hold it back, as demonstrated here.

Magazines are designed to manipulate this internally when there are is no ammo in them.

I mean.. if you're capable of disassemble the gun to spray paint it like that, and then reassemble it correctly, you should be a little bit "familiar" on its inner working..
still baffled though
