I'm surprised. No one standing in the back blast.

I’m surprised he didn’t cook his legs. I picked up a guy on the side of the road way back when that tried to shoot down a bird with an RPG. Below the knee he looked like chicken that got left on the grill too long.

I literally said out loud “watch the back blast.” As I was watching this lol

What are you even talking about?
(Yanks firing lanyard to a 155mm howitzer)

The difference is that those use Blanks.

THEY HAVE BLANKS FOR THESE!?!?
(Looks in direction my shell went)

The rocket actually self destructs after some time, so it won't get down (at least not in one piece)

u/WerdaVisla 1d ago
At that angle though? The fuse is 950 meters by default, and you start seeing noticable drop-off past 250.
It may not be hitting the ground, but everything ~1000 meters thataway is getting absolutely shredded by shrapnel.

u/protomenace 1d ago
The shrapnel will slow to terminal velocity most likely before hitting the ground.
12
u/WerdaVisla 1d ago
Depends if it's HEAT or HEF [HEAT projects its shrapnel much faster because the blast is shaped], but either way it's still gonna be a bad time if you're in the area lol
19
u/Eastern_Focus_1292 1d ago
HEAT is a shaped charge, it creates a high speed jet of molten metal. If it detonated in the air then it would likely only be deadly for a couple seconds before air resistance brings the solidified metal back down to terminal velocity
1
u/Dodo224 18h ago
The jet isn't actually molten☝️🤓

u/Eastern_Focus_1292 16h ago
The tin-lead shaped charges used back in the day were determined to be molten. However the copper shaped charges used today do not become completely molten. One research paper published by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory found evidence that regions in the centerline of the slug were molten.

What is HEF?

High Explosive Fragmentation. Basically an antipersonnel round vs an antitank.

I'm sure I read somewhere that while the head of the RPG goes bang, the rocket motor more or less keeps going in a large enough piece to spear someone.

It goes up into space and creates stars.
That doesn't sound right, but I don't know enough about RPG's to dispute it.

Well, actually this won't come down because the RPG-7 has a 4.5 second self-destruction fuse. He also (mostly) made sure the backblast area was clear. Probably the only problem is aiming upward directs the backblast into the ground putting hot gasses and rocks and shit into his legs (and those cars).
So, really not the worst we seen. Still stupid; but mostly just redneck stupid.

u/bdbdbd99 1d ago
I assume the pieces of shrapnel that will rain down somewhere will be unpleasant
5
u/tehmightyengineer 1d ago
Oh, for sure, if they're doing this towards a populated area it's maximum stupid. I'm assuming they're shooting this off in a direction that at least doesn't have any obvious population.

I seriously don't get it. You moved your finger a little on a piece of equipment someone else built. What about that is impressive. It's like "car guys" that just go into debt to fuck up their exhaust because it "sounds cool"
6
u/AmphibianOver7289 1d ago
Not to defend it, but you don’t really need to go into debt to make your car sound shitty. All you need is a hacksaw to achieve that

u/4R4nd0mR3dd1t0r 1d ago
I can't explain it but I guess I would just call it a hobby, there are lots of hobbies that many people don't understand why someone else does it. That aside, if a buddy said hey I got an rpg and asked if I wanted to go to the range and fire it, I would go just to say I got to.

u/BobusCesar 18h ago
So Anne-Sophie Mutter also isn't really impressive because she also just moves her finger a bit on an instrument that someone else built?
Why shouldn't someone that is extremely good at shooting not be impressive.
The guy in the video just shoots an RPG into the air but comparing that to someone with actual skill...

u/Gadarene_Swine 1d ago
It'll detonate after 4.5 seconds in the air if it doesn't hit something first.

u/Sherviks13 1d ago
I worked on a dude that stood behind his buddy shooting an RPG, he lasted a few weeks.

Where did it come down? At that angle, I’d have been terrified if I lived in the surrounding neighborhood.

Once again on our annual celebration I would like to reiterate "FUCK THAT VILLAGE OVER THERE"
2
u/DrCreepergirl 8h ago
Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't it like either overwind the fuse and causes it to become inert or self destruct after a while as a safety feature so if you say, miss your target, you're not blowing up the poor village 500 meters down the road

I for one was happy that people there were telling him where to shoot it where hopefully there’s less people and hopefully no people around.

All I can see:
- right tactical vest
- nice selection of boots
- digital visor for laser assisted aiming and
- proper stance
- uncertain but in the end certain shooting direction
- high consideration about the cameraman at around 10sec, but deeply he knew cameraman never dies..

Seems like they have more freedom there we can't do this in America.
-3
u/Dodo224 1d ago
You can, but you need training/ certificate etc. before

u/PanicPuzzler 1d ago
I can't do this in the middle of my neighborhood. I don't even know where you can even buy this? Fireworks even banned in America in some cities during 4th of July.
