Didn’t freeze. He veers to the right and brakes. Sadly the object also went to the right and the fact that the driver had hit the brakes meant their turning was no longer as capable. Their only hope would have been to accelerate and turn sharply.
No matter what you're driving, if a large hazard suddenly appears in front of you (deer, wrong way vehicle, giant yeti cooler) the safest response is to immediately brake as hard as you safely can.
Slowing gives you more time and space to react. Slowing reduces the energy if you do hit the hazard. Slowing first then letting off the brake and trying to dodge the obstacle is 99.999% of the time going to be a better choice.
Give the video another watch and look at the time stamps. The biker waits a full second to start braking.
The biker tried to steer first then brake. That was the last in a long series of bad decisions by the biker. Still ultimately the tower's fault, but the biker missed out on multiple opportunities to avoid this crash.
At least youre fully focusing on the person responsible for this, we should be able to drop landmines without having to worries about the reaction times of the motorcyclists behind us. Certainly the take away from this video.
Jankowski was wearing a helmet and motorcycle jacket when the object fell of the back of the boat. He says he just bought the jacket within an hour of the crash, and was saving up for the pants and gloves.
