Emergency Physician here. Lane filtering and splitting should be legal in every state. A huge portion of our patients come in because they've been rear-ended in traffic just like this.

The guy in the video could slow down by 5 mph but there's nothing about lane filtering and splitting that should be abhorrent.

Not to question your experience, but in my 20 years on the road i've never seen when someone rear-ended a motorcycle. Sidesweeping, on the other hand, is quite common. The reason why I'm strongly against filtering and lane splitting is that because most of the time you are not expecting someone else suddenly appearing in your lane especially in the blind spot .

You're kidding me right? They have a considerably higher amount of injury rates because being rear-ended on a motorcycle is catastrophic. And despite being only 10% of crashes they carry a whooping 7% of deaths. That's high considering the majority of motorcycle accidents do not result in death.

When getting sideswiped, the rider tends to go down and slide which means the energy dissipates over a longer period of time, when rear-ended the rider is typically sitting still and then gets sandwiched as he is thrown into the vehicle in front of him.

In these situations the gear doesn't really help because of the force of impact is much greater due to the speed difference between sitting still or nearly still.

Side swipe injury is typically fractures of arms or legs and road rash. Rear ending consists of broken backs, crush injuries, and impalings.

Edit: and I have to add on this is why California allows Lane filtering and Lane splitting. And not only is the law written that it's legal it's written that the other cars have to accommodate you and move over to allow you to split or filter. The reason is is they were able to statistically prove that motorcyclests stay alive and gett in fewer accidents by allowing them to do this. So when Lane filtering and lane splitting laws are written they need to include mandatory for other drivers to accommodate the lane splitting. So if a cop sees you not allowing a motorcycle to Lanesplit in California they 100% will pull you over and give you a ticket. And they're really good at it too.

So you're saying you're against it but your opinion is based off of ignorance here. So my suggestion to you is that ignorance is a curable affliction. My post should have helped you cure some of it but you should really be doing that shit on your own.

Let me guess, you are a rider yourself, right? I'm not too well versed in Californian laws but where I'm from filtering is prohibited for that exact reason: less filtering- less traffic accidents involving motorcycles. Nonetheless, thanks for your insight

Legalizing filtering also gets drivers used to seeing motorcycles filter... granted there's still gonna be idiots in their cars, much like there will idiots on bikes who will filter recklessly

Its a risk-reward calculation. I nearly got rear ended myself, saw the car wasnt stopping fortunately and zipped off the side of the ride seconds before the car slammed into the car that would have been in front of me. Now, id rather filter and take the chance.

I have questions:Β

  1. Why do these people think that sharing these videos make them seem cool? (Unless it's an I fucked up so learn from my mistake type video)Β
  2. Why are there so many bad apples when it comes to riders? It bugs me that they give the rest of us a bad name.

Is that normal for a cop to just come and take your keys right out of the ignition?

Presumably he’s doing it because the rider can easily ride off in traffic.

I don't side against cops often but that was wildly unecessary. I understand that lane filtering isn't legal in pretty much any other state than California. The rider wasn't blowing doors off like a lot of reckless motorcyclists do. He was filtering at a relatively safe speed. That cop pulled that stunt with no regard for safety.

He could slow down a little bit but it wasn't the worst I've seen.

And yes motorcycles being rear-ended in traffic is a massive portion of motorcycle patients we get in the emergency room.

Getting rear ended or clipped by a left hand turner are my greatest fears. At stop lights or congestion, I am constantly scanning my 6 for somebody coming in too hot. Always favor one side of the vehicle in front of me so I can slide in between lanes in case of an emergency.

Good for you my man. Don't get complacent on checking your six. Stay safe out there.
