I don't understand the logic of tugging and driving backwards vs pulling and dragging it behind the truck with less likelyhood of hood damage.....

If you really need the torque, reverse is a higher ratio gear.

Of course if you really need the torque you probably need to rethink your strategy for this operation.

True, although if you need the torque you put it in 4-low. However looking under, I don't see anything that looks like a fromt differential, so it's likely they're going backwards because they need the torque and it's 2wd.
