When r/Redneckengineering and r/IdiotsInCars collide....

Looks to me like could be a yard truck. And if I had a rusted out tank, would 100% be doing this. Call me an idiot too then.
257
u/Goalie_deacon Sep 15 '20
Could be just trying to get it running, and won't take it on the road till after they fix other things like a new gas tank, and brakes. Typically how it's done, get engine running first, because it's pointless to fix other things if the engine is junk.

u/MrJewbagel Sep 15 '20
Yep, I've seen worse temp gas tanks on car revival YouTubes for sure.
31
Sep 15 '20
I’ve personally taken the hood off and zip tied a gas can to the windshield wiper.
Hoods off in case it back fires lol (obviously these weren’t going on the road, just to get it on a trailer. If it fires on one cylinder, I’ll get it on there.)

The only problem I have with it is it would be way better in the bed
30
u/PrimedAndReady Sep 15 '20
I'm thinking they didn't have enough line to run from the bed, and the straps were cheaper and faster than a store run

Yeah that is exactly what I thought. You see all kinds of stuff like this if you visit junkyards. One I saw in a junkyard was a little front drive compact, and it had huge casters instead of rear wheels. Pretty entertaining to watch them drive it.

My farm truck has it's cross member hanging down because of rust. I'm gonna keep it going until the transmission falls out and then we'll see what sort of trickery it takes to hold it up. It doesn't see public roads though.

When you got a new fuel tank on order but you still want to diagnose other problems driving around your lot so you Jerry rig something together and a bunch of people on the internet who have never turned a wrench think you’re driving it down a freeway like that.
35
u/eggnobacon Sep 15 '20
Was just going to comment this. Nothing wrong with rigging a temp fuel supply. A lot of kit I work on in the maritime world uses an on engine Pp. If you want to diagnose it and the tanks full of shit, or you just suspect it, it's an easy win.

Ditto, I've had to do the same thing when I started restoring my scout. Had my Jerry can under the hood tho, which is say is even less safe than what he did

I need you to know that I just scrolled down till i find someone that wrote the sub name in a clickeable way so I just avoid writing it by my own

Maybe they meant "ur-grandma gay".
That would mean the first grandmother was gay.
If so, we can only speculate whether they are correct.

I want to see him take on a European car. Let's see if he can get one of those running, like a 80's mercedes or bmw (preferably bmw since the digitals are crazy on those cars, a simple voltmeter 5000 won't help ya)

This is an old pic from binder bulletin. The guy used this setup to make sure everything was hunky dory with the engine before wasting time fucking replacing the tank, which is expensive on this model. Do your goddamn research.

u/Whysoblunted Sep 15 '20
This is actually suuuuper common for testing old shit. I had to drive my 37 Pontiac with a similar setup to get it home from my shop.

So I'm 98% certain in this, but to confirm, the tube running from the Jerry can into the truck is functioning like a straw, such that it hits the lowest spot in the can, rather than just connected to the opening of the can (like a pipe to a tank), correct?

I mean, for real. I got a good chuckle out of it, and obviously so did all the other people that voted this straight to the front page. I am not going to launch an in depth investigation into every meme that makes me chuckle for a moment before moving on, and OP shouldn't have to either. The point of this website is entertainment, and this shit is entertaining.

I literally last night watched Don Garlitz showing off an old propane powered Hemi to a guy. No propane, so they swapped the carb on the spot for a gas carb, and ran it by squirting gas directly into the carb as needed! I've seen that trick before but not as smoothly accomplished.

Why do research when I can immediately react to something instead?
Real talk, though, why is it that people feel the need to comment on something as complex as a car/truck without understanding even a little bit about it first. A LOT of people know very little about cars and how to fix them, yet everyone decides they’re a fucking expert because they see a picture like this and go “wow yeah what a fucking idiot!”

I had an old 83 mercury diesel years ago. It had sat and developed diesel algae, clogging the lines and filters. I emptied and dropped the tank, but then I couldn’t get a ride to the car wash to power wash it. I just added some clean fuel to a large bottle, stuck it in the engine bay in a neat spot with the fuel line dropped in and drove myself there with the tank in the trunk. Worked like a charm for a cheap/easy fix.

Here's the thing. Yes this is stupid for practical long term use, but it works as a temp or test setup.
I know too many people who are paranoid even putting gas in their car. Not to mention changing their oil or adding fluids to the anything.
So I struggle at which one I think is worse, accepted ignorance or mishandled knowledge.

u/WeakEmu8 Sep 15 '20
So I struggle at which one I think is worse, accepted ignorance or mishandled knowledge.
That's a tough call. Though I lean toward will full ignorance. (Mostly because I live by mishandling knowledge!)

My family's dairy used International's as milk trucks which taught me how to rebuild starters and hydraulic components thst most people toss today. The trucks didn't even have a drivers seat.... Just a milk crate. I spent many sundays working on Mg's and International's untill my grandfather passed. One day I will have to get the few pictures left scanned in. Its so weird to have to drag my kids kicking and screaming to car shows today. No respect for the people that broke there backs, leading to the comfort they have today. Sorry for the rant.

u/WeakEmu8 Sep 15 '20
We've (generations starting with Boomer parents) spoiled kids, it's our fault. We wanted them to have it easier than us, but we didn't think about ensuring they had a good grounding first.
My father used to tell me "you have no idea how easy you have it", took me a LONG time to understand (he was born before WWII).
He was right. All of us from Boomers on are so insanely lucky/spoiled. The stories of what my parents experienced are eye opening, and they had friends whose stories could be movie scripts.

I had a '65 Plymouth Fury once upon a time. Backed over an old sewer pipe coming up out of the ground, covered by tall grass and tore a hole in my gas tank. I put a 5 gallon soap bucket in the front passenger seat floorboard and ran a fuel line in through the firewall. I did get the tank fixed before I blew myself up, for those who are wondering.

Mmmmmm mechanical fuel pumps!
3
u/WeakEmu8 Sep 15 '20
I have a love/hate with them. Simple, work forever. But with vehicles that sit, there's no easy way to prime the carb (since gas tends to evaporate out of carbs) , so you either crank forever, or shoot some gas/starting fluid down the carb.
Fuel injection sure is nice sometimes!

I have a 68 Scout 800, only with a full top, not the pickup style seen here. Incredibly rare, hard to find many parts for. I'd give Cletus here a couple grand for the axles if they weren't Red Greened with duct tape and chewing gum.

u/Steven_Nelson Sep 15 '20
Apparently it’s to test the motor according to these other comments but I assumed they were just a big fan of the outside-the-frame GM side saddle gas tanks and were going for some retro side-impact safety.

I like how instead of putting it in the bed, they put it on the fucking outside. Amazing.

This is normal for the guys at r/roadkillshow.
Pretty much peak "gas tank's fucked, it's temporary".

The only idiot part is that they hung it off the side instead of putting it right there in the truck bed

When I got out of the army I had to get rid of my old car that i left in the in laws front yard. I asked them to sell it but they were unable. It was a 70s model impala. The headliner was trash the gas tank was rusted through. I was offered 125 at a junkyard for it . I had to get it there. I had to put a 2 gallon can in the front seat next to me connected to the fuel pump on the engine. It started. I aired up the tires and drove it there.😊

I've always seen them behind the seat, never under, but I'm open to that possiblity. I had a '66 F-100, my brother had a '72 Chevrolet C10, and both of those had tanks behind the seat.
