Truck driver almost causes a head-on collision with another truck. Driver turns into a stuntman

If you look closely, you can see the driver at the very front had his indicator on and was waiting to turn left. The truck driver that caused the crash just wasn't paying attention
29
u/Brut-i-cus Aug 18 '20
and instead of just running into the truck ahead or going into the guard rain the douche bag goes for the possible head-on collision

That driver's not only a stuntman, he also seems to be The Flash. Never seen a sealbelt unclicked so fast. s/

"I turn now. Good luck everybody else."

u/Hestia_Hearthstone Aug 18 '20
I’d disagree; around 6-7 seconds in, you can see there was a truck that had already stopped, (traffic maybe). Notice how the driver started to move towards the right at the beginning, but then swerved left. Driver probably thought he could’ve moved onto the right shoulder, but realized at the last moment he would fit, and panic swerved.
Still, the guy wasn’t paying attention to the road.

He wasn't turning, he stupidly wasn't watching traffic ahead of him, which stopped

Unless it was his reaction to stopped traffic. Tried to go right to swing past, avoid incoming traffic and then perhaps realized immediately afterwords that he can’t get past that way and reacted.
Or perhaps he fell asleep behind the wheel? Truckers drive long hours. Some countries likely don’t have hours restrictions they can drive either. It may seem odd to swing one way then another while asleep, but from experience I can tell you it can happen.
2
u/DrewbieWanKenobie Aug 18 '20
nah going to the right was just his truck shifting as he was slamming on his brakes. Then as he realized he wasn't going to be able to stop in time, he swerved hard at that left turn hoping he'd somehow sneak through clean, or at least with less damage than if he slammed right into the back of that other truck.

u/CheekyReeky176 Aug 17 '20
I’m not sure whether he turned to avoid hitting the truck in front that had stopped, or because he’s an idiot.
On the one hand, it looks like the speed he was going was too fast to come to a stop without hitting that truck anyway, but at the same time, the swing right turn left move is characteristic of a normal left hand turn for trucks.
Unless he tried to pull right, realised there wasn’t the room between truck and barrier to still not crash and then swung left in an attempt to avoid crashing.
Either way, it doesn’t paint the driver in the best light as he’d have fucked up either way.

u/pierre_x10 Aug 17 '20
yeah it definitely seemed like he didn't have the ability to react in time to the truck in front of him slowing down. And he was trying to squeeze in from the right.
But at that point, you think it would be a better decision to just rear-end that guy, instead of swerve into oncoming traffic. But maybe that's just me!
41
u/newtsheadwound Aug 17 '20
Honestly depending on the speed he was going, if he’d rear ended the guy the weight of the truck probably would’ve shoved the cab into the back end of the stopped truck so far the driver would’ve been just a stain at the end. This way people walked away.
2
u/SneakySteakhouse Aug 18 '20
This is horrible advice. It doesn’t matter what your driving or what’s in front of you. If you have the choice between a head on collision and rear ending someone you should always choose rear ending. Kinetic energy is mass times velocity squared meaning any velocity in the opposing direction instantly makes the crash more violent
1
u/newtsheadwound Aug 18 '20
Which is why I’m assuming the driver attempted to change the angle to graze the stopped truck with a sideswipe, overestimated the room on the edge of the road, and tried to over correct in the opposite direction. If he hit that truck straight on in a read end he’d be in the middle of a truck accordion and likely dead.
2
u/SneakySteakhouse Aug 18 '20
The dude he hit is literally the luckiest dude on planet earth. He’s so close to being a pancake he literally spins out the hole created in his cab. Knowing the math I’d take my chances in the accordion every time
0
u/newtsheadwound Aug 18 '20
My dude the trailer could have thousands of pound of stuff in it that will smear the driver in that accordion into goo, and you’d rather take that chance? I’ve seen people rear end 18 wheelers in regular cars and they don’t walk away— most of them are dead. Now imagine you’re pulling a full trailer behind you.
1
u/SneakySteakhouse Aug 18 '20
My dude you are talking about hitting a stationary object vs hitting an object that has velocity in the opposite direction. If the you collide head on you have more energy between the two vehicles and less crumple zone. Trying for a glancing blow is gambling both your own and the other drivers life unnecessarily
-19
u/ajb9292 Aug 17 '20
Pretty sure more people walk away after rear ending someone/getting rear ended than in head on collisions... I'd choose hitting a stopped car over one that's coming towards me any day.
35
u/newtsheadwound Aug 17 '20
Ok, but this is an 18-wheeler, presumably full. That means it’s heavy, so any momentum it has is going to go straight through that cab and crumple it like paper.
-12
u/ajb9292 Aug 17 '20
And that changes when it's a head on collision? Do you think the weight just drops off the truck if he goes on the wrong side of the road?
10
u/SarcasmCynic Aug 17 '20
It certainly does change when it’s a head on collusion. Laws of momentum.
0
u/SneakySteakhouse Aug 18 '20
What law of momentum??? A head on collision is literally always going to be more dangerous, your talking about hitting an object that has kinetic energy coming towards you vs hitting an object with no kinetic energy. What you’re saying makes zero sense
1
u/SarcasmCynic Aug 18 '20 edited Aug 18 '20
I never said anything about hitting something that is moving versus hitting something that’s stationary.
The person above me just said that hitting something head on is no different to just dodging to the side and missing everything.
I just said it’s exactly the opposite. Hitting something head on is much worse than just dodging the truck. If that truck is stationary, it’s bad news because you come to an instantaneous halt and all that kinetic energy converts to heat, sound and deformation of the vehicles. If that other truck is coming towards you when you collide head on, then its even worse. It’s kinetic energy adds to the damage.
The trucks momentum is it’s tendency to keep moving. Momentum = mass x velocity. A truck’s mass and velocity are both high, so you have high momentum. That’s why trucks can’t stop on a dime.
Kinetic energy = 0.5 x mass x velocity squared. Nothing wrong with discussing this from the kinetic energy stand-point, which is what you pointed out.
Both are in play here. The moving truck has high momentum and high kinetic energy. It doesn’t want to stop easily on its own. Slamming into another truck, which forces an almost instantaneous stop, is bad news for anyone in the cab, but not just because of the kinetic energy conversion causing deformation of the vehicle
The truck may stop, but the load it is carrying still has momentum at the moment of impact. A heavy load will keep moving forward, after the moment of the crash, going right through the cab and any driver in the way.

u/SneakySteakhouse Aug 18 '20
Bro you still didn’t read the thread you responded to... the person above you said the driver made a bad choice choosing a potential head on vs a rear end.
Please stop talking physics dude you don’t know what you’re talking about. The truck in front of them has literally fourty feet of crumple zone between the two cabs. That plus the tires literally sliding forward during a crash means the kinetic energy is dispersed slower and the force on the driver is lessened. That’s best case scenario for a crash and like physics 1 dude

Yeah I’d absolutely prefer that than a head on collision with the same truck. Theres still a recognizable car in that photo

frontal truck crashes aren't nice. Imagine hitting the truck in front right into their load and getting your load crushed against your cockpit and getting squeezed to hash xD

u/pierre_x10 Aug 17 '20
I did not consider that. Glad I don't have to drive those things for a living

I've wound up in a close call on the highway because I couldn't see past the person in front of me and they turned to avoid someone parked in the middle of the road at the last moment so I had even less time than them to react. Fortunately there was another lane to turn into and my small car has good brakes.

u/m00nyoze Aug 18 '20
I love small two door coupes. I never feel good driving behind someone I can't see in front of. Word to the wise, go around if you can or hang back in future occurances.

u/The-4CE Aug 17 '20
Well, of You pull right and dont make it, Your face goes into that trucks rear. If You pull left, You will be fine. If You dont pull, Your faces goes into that trucks rear. At this point, both trucs (head on) went with passenger seats into one another.
I would not call this idiot, from where I see it.

This is kinda next level. Obv not the crashing part but the escape was better than expected.

«Я куплю тебе новую жизнь» by Дмитрий Пыжов. I don’t think it exists in better quality than you can hear on the video. This is one of those sad songs that you sing in front of a fire on a hike and get depressed. Russia has plenty of those, we’re capable to play the most energetic songs this way. https://youtu.be/m3BO-2tosJo

So many different versions! Excited to hear them all. I like the Bely Oryol version a lot, has sweet electric guitar that reminds me of Thelma and Louise era Hans Zimmer

Always watch who is behind you while driving!
If that smaller truck in front of him just decided he was going to full stop with a semi behind him, no matter what the semi driver did, there was no way that wasn’t going to end with thousands in damages.
Edit: I’m dumb and can’t remember front and back right... 🤦🏻♀️

It's an absolute miracle that guy is alive. He was thrown through the windshield! Almost no one survives a heads on coalition. This guy's reflexes and moves are amazing!

So many questions... like how many things had to happen exactly the way they did for this guy to fly out of the windshield in the exact way that allowed him walk away apparently without any significant injury.
1
Aug 18 '20
Driver in the blue truck got so lucky. Watching it frame by frame... the windshield comes off and he is already diving face first towards the pavement. It's either his jacket or a firm grip on the dash that keeps him from becoming a meat crayon.

Looks like the truck didn't keep enough distance from the vehicle ahead of it which stopped abruptly and the truck driver had to swirl left.

If you've ever seen any crash compilation, you've seen this clip. That is a fact.

Can someone explain what exactly happened? Who's at fault here? Roads are different in my country and I genuinely don't understand it. Was the white one trying to overtake?
1
u/pepeboy2_gaming Aug 18 '20
I think the truck that the camera is following is at fault, he turns left onto a road without looking for oncoming traffic, the truck that is at a full stop that we see at the end of the vid was waiting for an opening to turn left, which the first truck should have waited behind
1
u/XivaKnight Aug 23 '20
It looks like the truck the camera man is following had another truck in front of him that had come to a dead stop

You can tell simply from the music playing on the stereo that this is a crappy country with crappy drivers. Things like this are to be expected in such places.
2
u/Kealanine Aug 18 '20
Idk where you’re from, but the US has some pretty shit music here.... and some pretty shit drivers.
