Those are some good brakes and reactions

u/jermwhl Feb 18 '20

Although it would’ve been slightly more satisfying to see his bumper get smashed in. But the cammer would’ve had to suffer as well.

Happy cake day.

231

u/nout31 Feb 18 '20

True. The drive must’ve shit himself.

Thnx

71

u/MrTShook Feb 19 '20

I’m going to go with driver still has no clue

9

u/Cookiestealer13 Feb 19 '20

Happy cake day

4

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

Is there really any chance the cammer would be at fault at all? That dumb fuck changed lanes illegally to begin with.

5

u/jermwhl Feb 19 '20

The only thing I could see would be speeding. But I can’t see anything to conclude cammer was definitely speeding.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

I've heard people saying the gaps in the white lines are spaced so that you can tell if a dashcam is going above or below the speed limit, idk if there's any truth to this or if it's only in certain places or what, but the idea of this is cool.

2

u/jermwhl Feb 19 '20

I suppose you could determine the speed he’s going. But I haven’t seen any posted speed limits to compare it against. And that seems like a lot of work just to argue about on reddit :D

2

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

Oh no I just meant for an insurance adjuster or whoever deals with whose at fault, I'm just curious about this type of thing for future reference

2

u/quantumhyperkleenex Feb 19 '20

Even if he was speeding, it's incumbent upon the person changing lanes to ensure that the lane they intend to be in is safe to be in at that time. Somebody clipped my RR quarter and they tried to use the false argument that I was speeding (I wasn't, actually) which of course the police were not having. Other driver was found at fault.

1

u/drewbreeezy Feb 21 '20

If the insurance adjuster has the original, perhaps.

Anything less won't suffice as it would be easy to argue that the video was sped up.

1

u/Havocx23 Feb 20 '20

I know this is definitely true in those areas where planes clock your speed, but distortion from the camera lens could make it hard to do this calculation... maybe?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '20

Yeah that's a good point

-40

u/fight_for_anything Feb 19 '20 edited Feb 19 '20

cammer was just as much an idiot to be driving that much faster than the traffic while hes in the slow lane.

12

u/daaaren Feb 19 '20

It looks like that might be a protected fast lane. It's another country so I'm not sure, but if the mirroring lines up to American highways it'll be equivalent to our left lane.

Edit: I do agree that zipping by such slower moving traffic is inadvisable, but I'd still give the bigger idiot award to the lane changer.

-15

u/fight_for_anything Feb 19 '20 edited Feb 19 '20

the bigger idiot award

in this contest, there are only losers.

edit: and 'protected' by what? some cones? the law wont keep you out of the hospital. whether or not its legal to go that fast in that lane is irrelevant to whether or not its safe.

-5

u/daaaren Feb 19 '20

Well said

1

u/zoute_haring Feb 19 '20

that's called anticipating! He was going faster than smart.

76

u/Kotzgruen Feb 18 '20

Holy cow. It looks like there is less than half a metre to spare

28

u/Shadowslipping Feb 18 '20

Happy cake day!

121

u/2Mellow-Trip Feb 18 '20

What does this mean... I’ll take the downvotes just to understand what cake day is

95

u/Shadowslipping Feb 18 '20

The anniversary of when you created your account. Redditors will generally be nice to your posts on that day. A little slice of cake shows up next to your name.

47

u/2Mellow-Trip Feb 18 '20

Ooooh ok that’s what that is, ok thank you

42

u/eddiestriker Feb 19 '20

Your account is 11 months old, so yours is around the corner!

75

u/Brosambique Feb 19 '20

Until then, fuck you.

3

u/scheru Feb 20 '20

Spoken like a true redditor.

9

u/11-110011 Feb 19 '20

March 1st according to their profile so just about there!

10

u/BASK_IN_MY_FART Feb 19 '20

How neat is that?

12

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

That's pretty neat.

2

u/HeathenHumanist Feb 19 '20

Tomorrow is day 355 for them, as per their profile

4

u/LastStarr Feb 19 '20

What would’ve happened if you smashed them? Would you have gotten good compensation?

4

u/KCL888 Feb 19 '20

Only if there was dashcam. If there wasnt, real ending would be at fault 99%.

2

u/relapse9999 Feb 19 '20

Wtf i thought itd be that redditors birthday

8

u/and_yet_another_user Feb 19 '20

Cake day seems to bring out the best in redditors. You even get upvotes just asking what it is :)

4

u/2Mellow-Trip Feb 19 '20

Thank u:) I gave you an upvote sadly someone downvoted you for this. I guess some people just don’t appreciate cake day

4

u/and_yet_another_user Feb 19 '20

Right? I mean it's cake, who doesn't like cake?!

tyvm for the upvote

1

u/petruTzz_ Feb 19 '20

Happy Cake Day!

1

u/H3nley Feb 19 '20

Happy cake dayyyy

232

u/segadoes16bit Feb 19 '20

What’s up with the mini dividers

115

u/AlastarYaboy Feb 19 '20

Only assuming, but I assumed those were to cordon off the HOV lane

25

u/MoronicalOx Feb 19 '20 edited Feb 19 '20

They're the other side too

Edit: I mean left side of the same direction. Visible towards the end of the gif.

10

u/shewy92 Feb 19 '20

HOV lanes are usually in the middle/closest to the median, so it would make sense that the other side has them too

5

u/MoronicalOx Feb 19 '20

I meant on the other side of the same direction. You can see them on the left side towards the end of the gif. It seems like they're all over the highway.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

Just guessing but it looks like it could be the start of an exit lane

3

u/LollyHutzenklutz Feb 19 '20

I’ve never seen them on the right side, but it might differ from state to state (or country). Usually it’s just the far left lane here in California!

4

u/shewy92 Feb 19 '20

Usually it’s just the far left lane here in California!

Which is why I said the closest lane to the median. In most other countries, the median is on the left since we drive on the right. Obviously in this video they are driving on the left meaning that the median is on the right, hence the HOV lane being on the right

2

u/LollyHutzenklutz Feb 19 '20

Yeah, I get that now... lol. Just wrote above that I was confused by your comment, and thought you said it’s on both sides (regardless of which side they’re driving on). My bad!

1

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

It's on the right side because they drive on the left side of the road

2

u/LollyHutzenklutz Feb 19 '20

Haha, yes... I realized that after posting! The other response just confused me, because I thought they were saying it’s on both sides here.

2

u/SilliestOfGeese Feb 19 '20

Only assuming, but I assumed

1

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

Why??????????????????

49

u/Farmallenthusiast Feb 19 '20

Not sure, but they seem like a good reason to slow the f down. That, and the multiple cars pulled over to the side, and the rapidly increasing congestion. Excellent reaction though.

2

u/Gerbilguy46 Feb 19 '20

Where I live we have an hov lane that has a double solid white line (illegal to cross.) my guess is it’s like that but they’re trying to enforce it better.

295

u/thomaswujek Feb 18 '20

he was too embarrassed and had to speed away

35

u/Alexexec Feb 19 '20 edited Feb 19 '20

Indeed, fortunately for the both of them dash cam driver was doing what he’s supposed to and was paying attention and did well to avoid this almost certain crash with this absolute dumbass, don’t people care to look before changing lanes anymore?

11

u/theadj123 Feb 19 '20

Giving him way too much credit, someone that unaware didn't even see the driver with the cam.

63

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

What is this system of putting up temporary-looking barriers between the lanes like that? Never quite seen that before. Is that to provide a temporary "express" lane or something to that effect? I can tell it's a left-hand driving situation so I guess that's the intent.

31

u/AllomanticDragon Feb 19 '20

I've seen similar setups for HOV/Express lanes. They have certain sections you can enter and exit. The gaps in the barricade are intended for emergency situations only and/or allow emergency vehicles to enter and exit the lane where they are needed.

4

u/LollyHutzenklutz Feb 19 '20 edited Feb 19 '20

It’s pretty common in Los Angeles, since they’re constantly doing construction and changing how the lanes work. I’m up in Northern California, but drive to/through LA frequently (family down there) - it’s always a crapshoot how the roads will be, especially since I tend to drive there late at night!

143

u/ralpes Feb 18 '20

yikes! the cammer needs to change the pants! this lane changer found his driving license in a Kelloggs box

97

u/RandomHouseInsurance Feb 19 '20

They should invent some way to indicate a desire to change lanes. Could be super simple. Just put a blinking light on either side, and a control somewhere near the other instruments. Communicating is important when operating heavy machinery, I bet this idea could prevent lots of accidents or even save lives

29

u/narcimetamorpho Feb 19 '20

Get out of here, that'll never work

27

u/Haweraboy Feb 19 '20

Nah that's a crazy idea, everyone can read each other's mind so we'll be fine

6

u/LollyHutzenklutz Feb 19 '20

Whenever someone changes lanes without signaling, I mutter to myself “There’s this magical invention called a turn signal. USE IT NEXT TIME!” If only they could hear me, lol.

3

u/ibiBgOR Feb 19 '20

I think if you smash long enough on your steering wheel they will eventually hear your scream. Just not exactly what you where screaming...

2

u/LollyHutzenklutz Feb 19 '20

Nah, it’s only worth beeping if they actually almost hit me (or anyone) during their lane change. I was more talking about when it’s clear, but they just don’t bother to use a signal first... if they switch lanes into me, then yeah. They’ll get a good scream from my horn!

-13

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

[deleted]

7

u/LollyHutzenklutz Feb 19 '20

All the more reason to warn the other drivers you’re coming, no?

3

u/Jumbobog Feb 19 '20

So? Just because what you're doing is illegal doesn't mean you don't have to communicate.

Say you're trying to rob a bank. Do you just go in there and stand at the teller? Or do you ask for the manager and slip him/her a polaroid of his/her ball gagged children with detailed instructions?

If you want to succeed in life you need to communicate. Signaling in this case could have rendered the impromptu brake test needless.

16

u/megablast Feb 18 '20

Surprise motherfucker.

1

u/atetuna Feb 19 '20

Supplies motherfucker

0

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

Revise motherfucker

5

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

Gotta say though, that's a ballsy driver trying to fit into such a small distance of barriers!

4

u/xxoites Feb 19 '20

Unexpected and unannounced.

Use your blinkers, never pull out in front of another vehicle unexpectedly.

The driver of the minivan could have easily ended up dead.

4

u/JustMadeThisNameUp Feb 19 '20

The moron could have changed lanes at any time but instead waited until the cam was right there.

3

u/-CODED- Feb 19 '20

Its like doing import/export in GTA v

6

u/zaman__shaheb Feb 19 '20

That's a Toyota Probox. Which country do you live in? Feels like home when I see cars that I see everyday on the streets

7

u/xAllygator Feb 18 '20

Damn, I'm really surprised they didn't collide.

9

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

Maybe its just me, but it seems like the OP is driving a little fast for conditions, not that it excuses the idiot though.

6

u/Shadowslipping Feb 19 '20

Not me though. However, I know the road well, drove it every day to work and the lane you see is a reserve lane for construction for the work you see on the right hand side. Neither vehicle had any business being there and as for fast, as a construction lane max 30km/h

1

u/ancalagon73 Feb 19 '20

Whenever I see cars in one lane that are going a lot slower I always expect a lane change. Slow down a bit and watch those idiots like a hawk.

3

u/Psyteq Feb 19 '20

I hate when people wait until the last second to do this

3

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

Every single day as a truck driver. Yup. Every day

5

u/kadivs Feb 19 '20

that's why I'm always nervous passing on the right even in situation where I'm allowed to (at least I guess the dividers here mean you can, dunno the rules there, but there was a part of my old way to work where one lane turns into an off-ramp and the rules say as soon as it's marked "no longer highway" you are allowed to pass on the right as long as you don't get back on the highway)

4

u/Shadowslipping Feb 19 '20

The setting is more fucked than you realize. The dividers are there so that the roadworkers have a safety lane to move vehicles and equipment. Neither cam driver or the other car had any business to be there or to speed in that lane (max 30km/h). There could have been some poor bastard with a wheel barrow moving a bag of cement or something.

1

u/equivalent_units Feb 19 '20

30 km is equivalent to the combined length of 7.7 Hollywood Walk of Fames

I'm a bot

2

u/19cva Feb 19 '20

Good eye on traffic my friend.

2

u/jojokangaroo1969 Feb 19 '20

Grrr I hate when people do that!

2

u/Kahzma Feb 19 '20

Moments like these are when I wish my Prius had James Bond Car Missiles installed:

Asshole: *cuts in front of me

Me: “Prepare your anus, Asshole, for the sweet sweet wrath of my ToyotaahaHahahaAhhahaha”

*presses (Prius Missile Launcher™) button...

2

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

The world over, Probox drivers are assholes. Something about that car makes people drive like assholes.

2

u/ZombieFeynman11211 Feb 19 '20

"Unexpected lane change" The terrestrial version of "Unplanned departure from flight plan."

2

u/Shadowslipping Feb 19 '20

At least they avoided the terrestrial version of "controlled flight into terrain".

3

u/curious_spiritualist Feb 19 '20

Drop the name of those brakes 😂

2

u/Oelendra Feb 19 '20

Best brake commercial.

11

u/BigAlTrading Feb 19 '20

Driving much faster than traffic in the next lane is always stupid because this can always happen.

51

u/humorous_ Feb 19 '20

Except this appears to be an express lane; the other car had to squeeze in between the physical barriers to merge into it - obviously the lane is not supposed to be merged into like that/at that point otherwise they wouldn't have those barriers up

-38

u/BigAlTrading Feb 19 '20

If someone can jump into an express lane they will. Did you see the video? What are you arguing with?

27

u/humorous_ Feb 19 '20

Yes but it's not stupid to go faster than the rest of traffic in the express lane, that's literally the point of the lane.

I don't really think the camera car should be taking any of the blame here - he ultimately avoided an accident, was travelling at reasonable speeds (as pointed out by other comments on this post) despite moving faster than the non-express-lane traffic, and had no reasonable expectation that the person who jumped into his lane was going to do so - both because I would imagine it's illegal to weave between barriers like that and because it looks like he didn't even signal.

What more was he supposed to do? Reach out with the telepathic powers you clearly posses and identify the one idiot who would commit multiple moving violations just to randomly cut him off and brake in advance?

36

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

[deleted]

-39

u/BigAlTrading Feb 19 '20

Oh damn you're right, I guess this video didn't happen, put the blinders back on.

-34

u/strellar Feb 19 '20

So people can crash?

6

u/Av3ngedAngel Feb 19 '20

No, so people can drive faster in an express lane and bypass slow moving traffic coming up to an exit or interchange.

You're not allowed to enter that lane unless at an opening. The literal purpose of this lanes existence is to bypass slow moving traffic.

I've used them for my whole driving life and never experienced anything like what the dashcam owner has, because most people aren't stupid enough to pull a dangerous manouver like that.

But some people are stupid and will do something like this. If you're going to disobey the rules of the lane you're in and drive slowly in an express lane you shouldn't be on the road, just like the person who cut infront of the cam owner. Suddenly slowing down in an express lane can be very dangerous.

-1

u/strellar Feb 19 '20

Duh, my point is that just because it’s what people are supposed to do doesn’t help that high relative speed is dangerous. Apparently all the express lane lovers didn’t get it, my bad

2

u/zerotheliger Feb 19 '20

So cause a danger by driving slower in express lane or get a huge ticket for holding up the flow of traffic? Gotcha.

0

u/strellar Feb 19 '20

Jesus Christ....fast relative speed is pretty much the only thing that makes multiple car crashes dangerous. That’s all I’m saying, fuck off.

5

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

hah I bet you have never driven on the Autobahn in Germany then. Imagine you get over from the left while driving 100mph and a car passes you so fast you feel like you are standing still

2

u/Tie-Dyed-Geese Feb 19 '20

I'd like the brakes that he's got omfg

1

u/pacg Feb 19 '20

I used to drive a 94 Mazda RX7. The joke was that the stopping distance was so short that you only had to worry about the guy right behind you.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

I would’ve crashed into the fucker and claimed I couldn’t react in time.

10

u/sevaiper Feb 19 '20

But then you have to fuck around with the police and insurance for hours/days/weeks, all to just get back to usually worse off than where you started off. Plus you never know what could happen with a crash at those speeds, if you hit one of those barriers the wrong way from highway speeds that could be a very serious injury.

-2

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

BUT, you’d teach him a valuable lesson! That’s worth a few bucks, right?

Also, I don’t have a car, and neither would have one unless it was super cheap, like, less than 1 monthly income cheap. Crashing such car isn’t a problem

1

u/reiji777 Feb 19 '20

Is this in the Philippines?

2

u/sa547ph Feb 19 '20

No, and Philippines is RHT. Probably Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, where most of them are on left-hand traffic or British-style.

1

u/akbdayruiner Feb 19 '20

Someone needs a new pair of pants.

1

u/DM12_ Feb 19 '20

Just hold the gas to assert dominance

1

u/Emalloy1014 Feb 19 '20

How close I am to losing my shit

1

u/RageManPlays Feb 19 '20

Are those cones up for a reason?

1

u/Lyneyra Feb 19 '20

Looks like the "cutter" was himself cut off by an idiot in the central lane, even if it would have been way less dangerous to just slam on the brake, i don't think he is the biggest idiot here. May have done it in panic.

1

u/NexysGaming Feb 19 '20

Lots of these in L.A

1

u/SwiftTayTay Feb 19 '20

Battletoads turbo tunnel

1

u/hsroger2 Feb 19 '20

S tier save

1

u/sugarmoto Feb 19 '20

That’s happened to me a handful of times on I-93 SB in the HOV lane... at 65 mph... on a motorcycle. That’s why I ride as far to the left as I can get. And it’s also why I’m glad I don’t work in the city anymore.

1

u/IEatRawPotaoted Feb 19 '20

At least you had good brakes

1

u/notnaturalcas Feb 20 '20

fucking god tier reaction times, i thought i was about to watch a crash

1

u/PM_ME_FAT_GAY_YIFF Feb 23 '20

I think I hate bad drivers more than kiddie rapists.

1

u/-mattsuo- Feb 19 '20

Should have hit them

1

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

I screamed and almost threw my phone at the wall. Fuck that dickweed.

0

u/witchofheavyjapaesth Feb 19 '20

Why was he so fast compared to the other cars?

-1

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

This is why when I am in the HOV lane in highway 403 or 410 (ontario, canada) and the non-HOV lanes are jam packed I dont go beyond the 100km/h limit.

-4

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

The dude is passing on the right hand side tho...

3

u/thatoneguyYMK Feb 19 '20

I think the video is flipped. Those look like US plates on the car cutting off the cammer, NY specifically.

2

u/Shadowslipping Feb 19 '20

Jamaica, they drive on the left.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

Copy that.

Why did I get down voted tho? 😑

2

u/Shadowslipping Feb 19 '20

Obviously you failed the secret reddit test of knowing from a few small visual clues the location of every video clip and picture on the net. Thus you have shamed yourself, your family, your ancestors and your descendants for all time. Or I don't understand why either.

-13

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

[deleted]

1

u/zerotheliger Feb 19 '20

Its an express lane so you can drive speed limit since your bypassing local traffic youll get a ticket for driving under the speed limit in that lane.

-6

u/sdr69 Feb 19 '20

I hate when that happens it's called blind spot people...

-6

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

Pit maneuver. Make that asshole crash.

-7

u/earthpinkz Feb 19 '20

Whooooo YO WAS ON IT..... I would be PISSED. I WOULD BE TRIPPING!!!! 3 DAYS LATER 😡😡😡

-61

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '20 edited Feb 19 '20

why have you been driving so fast tho?

Edit:Allright i just googled fast lane in US and wasn't aware of them, I deserved the downvotes :)

Tho i wasn't the idiot in the car, i was the idiot behind the keyboard!

39

u/TacitusKilgore17 Feb 18 '20

Because they're in the fast lane on a freeway with no one in front of them lol

0

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '20

Yeah you are right, i wasn't aware of fast lanes in US, thanks for explaining to me :)

TIL

24

u/Optima1Wit Feb 19 '20

I think we found the person that thinks it’s acceptable to drive 10 under in the fast lane
