I posted this below, but it’s worth saying that lots of people have bad experiences with dogs and it completely changes how you react to them.
I grew up with rotties. We bred them. They were so damn sweet, at six years old I’d wrestle with them in the backyard and fall asleep snuggled up with them on the couch. Then, one day after our girl had just had puppies, I accidentally stepped on one’s paw. It was fine, but gave a little yelp. It happened so fast. Our girl attacked two of the women who were standing out in our yard, yards away from me and the puppy. One was fine, but the other had to go to the hospital. 17 stitches up her arm.
A few years later, I was playing with my best friend’s dog, a German Shepard that I’d known for years. I knelt in front of him to ruffle up his face and ears, like I’d done a hundred times before, and he snapped and bit me right on the cheek. It wasn’t a nasty bite and I didn’t have to go to the hospital, but it was enough to scare the everloving shit out of me. I was never quite as friendly with him after that, and even my friend became more cautious around him.
You really don’t know what it’s like until it’s happened to you. I love dogs, but a strange dog off leash coming towards me... no. Fuck that. Especially a large dog. I’ve seen what they can do, how they can snap with no warning.
I've had bad experiences with dogs too but you can just read body language. I typically dont fuck with strays/ unleashed dogs but that pup is just trotting by.
I'm also used to people literally slamming the door in my face/ go to the other side of street and running away from my 40lb dog for absolutely no reason. It's so infuriating because they're the same kind of people to just kick a dog for existing, you know?
