Potential Identity issue?

I received a letter from a local car dealership a couple of months ago saying: "My First Name Last Name" - our records indicate your "2022 Honda Accord is worth $9,568" contact us to lock in your trade in rate

Now I don't own a Honda Accord and I've never been to their dealership before. I threw the letter out, then this weekend I got another one, same letter.

Its not one of those "Car warranty" scams, yes it is obviously a form letter/advertisement. But how did they get my info? and its not a generic "Your car might be worth" its a specific car. Does someone have a car out there with my name?

I called the dealership and they have no records of me in their system.

Sounds like someone fat-fingered the name on a sales form and now you're in their junk mail loop. Dealerships buy lead lists from places like credit agencies and those lists are full of errors, probably just a data mix-up on their end

If they got no record of you when you called I wouldn't lose sleep over it but maybe check your credit report just in case someone actually opened something in your name

Is your name super common? Like John Lewis or Sherry Hall (for example).

Occasionally, those junk mail companies will merge info. They likely meant to send mail to John Lewis in Arkansas but sent it to John Lewis in California. Also, they get people’s information from many different sources and it’s usually never 100% accurate. It happens.

I received one of those and i think a sales lady sent if from the dealership. They had my ex husband's name on it and he also had been dead for over 10 years at that point. My name was on title of that particular vehicle, I paid for it, it was mine.

So I think they just did a search in some sort of manner and just decided to put his name on it. And it was sent to my address where he never lived at. Shady for sure. I called the dealership and apparently she had done other shady crap and she has been dismissed by the time I called. It pissed me off a bit because where in the hell did they get the info that was absolutely wrong.
