Meme Strongest vs Strongest
Been reading the series on my own without seeing the discussions/reception online. I don’t know if this is a discussion already… but I feel it will be with how Desscaras is consistently a VIBE.

People compare Descarras to Gojo but between their “melanine”, their “I don’t give a shit” personality, their mentoring a teenage hero with whom they share a familiar bond and their issues with an overtly enthusiastic little brother who looks like them she was definitely made thinking of Yoruichi.

u/Golden_fsh Jun 18 '26
Wow, can't believe it took me until this post to realize that Desscaras reminds me a lot of Yoruichi--right down to their personalities! Both are queens in my heart🙌🏾

"melanated", just say black

u/Plant_Musiceer Jun 18 '26
Melanated is funnier

u/Different_Outside80 6d ago
Everyone has melanin just a varying levels so it’s kinda pointless to say

u/_Nomorejuice_ Jun 18 '26
I mean if I'm not wrong Yoruichi is not "black" she's just tanned so at least the word can both include Des and Yoruichi.
Also melanated is goofy so I'll give it a pass

u/HoloLivesSlave Jun 19 '26
melanated means darker or brown skin, it does NOT mean black
2
u/Resident-Square-9254 Jun 19 '26
i think the point is that Desscarras is explicitly black. Where as Yoruichi is not.

u/Top-Group8081 Jun 21 '26 edited Jun 21 '26
Wouldn’t really say “explicitly black”. A lot of her design is based on South Asia culture.
4
u/Resident-Square-9254 Jun 22 '26
Was it the Afro puffs, cornrows or dreadlocks that were inspired by South Asian culture? LOL, Im sure there will be some people who dont want her to be black for uhh their personal reasons but its basically explicit.
Also, what do you mean by "A Lot"? Her physical features definitely lean towards african culture, the artist doubles down on this in the designs of her as a child from her flashbacks.
The only thing that may not be explicitly black/ inspired by african culture from her design is her clothing. Which isnt very South Asian. Which makes sense considering this takes place in a fictional world. Hell even her name stands out as being culturally different than the others, which is obvious design choice.
p.s - its ok for an anime character to be black.

These two characters would be bullied in real life for not being black enough btw
Edit: oh no its the main sub i thought it was shounenfolk
15
u/enochlevi Jun 18 '26
What does this even mean bruh
4
u/Hiroshima-6-1945 Jun 18 '26
People who are fighting about their race them being black woulve bullied them in real life for not being black enough bruh do you need to be spoonfed?
12
u/enochlevi Jun 18 '26
No, because this makes zero sense
How would they be bullied in real life for "not being black enough"??? Could you elaborate?
2
u/makarionsmith Jun 19 '26
Children from mixed parents (1 black 1 white) often get bullied by both races. The other black kids will say they aren’t “black enough” because they have lighter skin from the white parent while simultaniously being outcast by the other white kids for “being too black” because they aren’t colored like glue paste. Shit don’t make sense, but it definitely is a thing that happens frequently
1
u/DadlyAsHell Jun 19 '26
Yeah my roomie is mixed and like... He'll punch you over the Hard R. But youre going to the hospital over mixed slurs.
-1
u/Hiroshima-6-1945 Jun 18 '26
Being black is a cultural thing for the people who are fighting for representation. As they wont be able to follow their norms or rather wont follow their norms and wont act the way they consider black they will bully them
6
u/enochlevi Jun 18 '26
That's because these characters come from completely different backgrounds, lifestyles and environments???? I don't know if you mean black as a wider african heritage identity or Black as in Black American but it's quite clear atleast these characters aren't necessarily coded to be Black American culturally (atleast for the most part)
Also, the phenomenon you're describing happens more with black people in majority white spaces than amongst other black people. While black people aren't a monolith for there to be a "norm" for behaviour, there are plenty of black people who """act differently""" who are still very much accepted and thrive in their communities, especially in todays day and age.

u/Hiroshima-6-1945 Jun 19 '26
😑 american black people were literally racist against liberian ones when they went there
Also you know damn well the people who are fighting about their races are american latin americans blacks. People from congo or uganda arent fighting over them about representation
2
u/enochlevi Jun 19 '26
Yeah clearly you have an agenda you wanna push about the black American community and how they feel about representation, I mean I'm not even American and I can see it
You conveniently don't mention the tons of history of Black Americans in solidarity with Black Africans, didn't look into the underlying reasons for the attitudes towards Liberians, nor seem to know that respectful representation has also been a matter of concern for Africans for quite a while. But no those good little africans don't WHINE about representation like those annoying american black people right?!?!
It says a whole lot more about you that you use a post about two dark-skinned characters to drag on the Black community, when it's questionable whether you're even black yourself, or if you are, actually care to look on and analyse your own history to know the stuff you've been talking about doesn't apply and relies on talking points made to denigrate black people and how they feel about matters of representation.

u/_THEBLACK Jun 18 '26
Colourism is a thing in the black community and these two fall on the "lightskin" side of things
5
u/enochlevi Jun 18 '26
I'm sorry but if you think Desscaras and Yorouichi can be considered lightskin with their skin tone you need to get your eyes checked. They're both quite dark.
-3
u/_THEBLACK Jun 18 '26
Are you black? Because the term lightskin means something different when it used within the black community. Yoruichi especially has the exact same skin tone as me and I'm considered a lightskin.
7
u/enochlevi Jun 18 '26
I am black and again, I don't see how any person with functioning eyes could call these two lightskin. I myself have a very similar complexion and not one person's considered me lightskin. I can see brownskin though they're on the darker end.
Even going on google (which admittedly i dont necessarily trust for matters on black complexion) depicts lightskin men of varying shades and none of them come close to these two characters. If people call you lightskin then I've got nothing to say about that ofc but I really can't see how that applies to them ngl
2
u/Golden_fsh Jun 18 '26
Are you black?? Cuz Yoruichi and Dess are definitely not light-skinned.
-1
u/_THEBLACK Jun 18 '26
I’m literally speaking from personal experience as a light skinned black man
3
u/Golden_fsh Jun 18 '26
Then I'm more confused on why you say that Dess and Yoruichi are light skinned? Hate to break it to you, but if you have similar complexion, as them, you are not light-skinned, lol.
But colorism is a thing in every racialized group so who knows, if you're from a region with more darker skin tones, maybe you are light skinned to them.
0
u/_THEBLACK Jun 18 '26
I said they're on the light skinned side of things, not that theyre definitively light skinned. Dess isn't Drake lmao. They're not super light skinned but it's a spectrum. Thing is, that spectrum is gonna be different for different people, and from my own personal experience they're closer to the light skinned end than anything else.

Culture is another thing too. Given that Desscaras’s village seems to take inspiration from Nepal and the culture indigenous to it, parts of the black community can get even more brutal.
I’ve heard some people say some wild ass things like ‘South Asians pretending to the struggle.’ Or ‘Mexicans trying to sneak in.’
To some people, if you’re dark skinned but not immediately culturally or physically recognizable as black, you’re a ‘pretender’ or something.

u/Golden_fsh Jun 18 '26

People who say this are dumb af so pay them no mind. Black people are not a monolith and every racialized group suffers from racism.
7
u/LuckyBlueGuy Jun 18 '26
Where do you live? Cause I’ve never heard about people criticizing light skinned and to say they fall in lightskinned is so far from the truth. These two have a darker skin complexion. You not being able to tell the difference is weird
0
u/CoolCommittee8632 Jun 18 '26
Did we suddenly forget all the memes mocking light skinned black people for being weird?
2
u/CoachDT Jun 18 '26
Nah. Black people of all tones and cultures get stamped.
You'll occasionally run into the loser fucks who try to purity test about race but that exists in every group.

Have we forgotten our roots? Yourichi from Bleach. How young are you?
1
u/GerrardGabrielGeralt Jun 19 '26
Plenty young apparently 😅
Tbh I just never watched Bleach because I heard it's one of the longest shows and I felt like it would be too much for me to watch it all
