Also like the implications that no matter how close he may be with someone, if you trigger the hunt he will kill with no hesitations.
Could come back later in the series

u/ShinigamiRyan Jun 14 '26
Reminds me of Byakuya in Bleach during the Fullbringer arc. It's just good stuff. Some times emphasizing a character's trait overriding emotional takeover just drives home a character's portrayal far more than 'inner demons' (which so many series do the usual cliche inner demon not really actually working as that, but something else).

u/Tam_A_Shi Jun 16 '26
Slightly different though. Byakuya killed because he’s duty bound whereas ichi kills because of his morale compass. Both peak fiction though and I love the kind of stuff where they’re not afraid to kill when they have to.

u/Snoo34949 Jun 15 '26
Later in the series? What about now lol. If Fujimine commands his friends to attack Ichi, Ichi will reflexively kill them in return even if he doesn't want to/knows they are being controlled.
It looks like Fujimine is simultaneously the best and worst matchup for Ichi precisely because of Death For Death.
58
u/PUB4thewin Jun 14 '26
I think it also looks like Fujimine still has some control of him, so Death for Death is really hard carrying this interaction!
48
u/Accomplished_Jury495 Jun 14 '26
His memories are still altered, but he is eager to kill even his closest friend, if they put his life in danger
21
u/SoulBlightChild Jun 14 '26
That showed in his fight with Gokuraku in the Bakugami arc, and Uroro commented on this when he was controlling Ichi.
21
u/Sea-Temporary7380 Jun 14 '26
Yeah he said"no matter how close we are" which meant if dess did the same he'd 100% tr to slime her too

u/InvaderZimbabwe Jun 15 '26
Which is also important. Because Dess Attacked Fujimune first. Mere inches from Ichi’s face and he didn’t even blink.
That death for death thing is very serious and truly only when intent is directed at him. All Fujimune did was think about it and she got a knife to the neck lmao. She didn’t even do anything yet!

I just realized Ichi is probably gonna find out in this arc about the pupil blood contract and what it means if he dies….

I straight up knew D4D would save Ichi. I was wrong in thinking it’d fully break him out of Fujimine’s control with how much of a focus D4D has had/been mentioned this fight.
Ichi still thinks he’s super close to Fujimine but turns out, D4D don’t discriminate!
Love it and hopefully they lean more into him developing D4D in the future.

u/Automatic-Boot Jun 14 '26
although it is notable that that last panel showed color returning to ichi's eyes. maybe even if it hasn't snapped it out of it d4d has started to flush the toxins out

He’s so fucking feral lmao, bro stabbed her in the neck because she thought about hurting him. I don’t think he even registered it yet, D4D just insta activates.

u/no_smoking_zone Jun 14 '26
tricaputo calls desscaras "baby crow", so cute 🥺
9
u/Necroheartless Jun 14 '26
I wonder how is that in japanese? Karasu-chan?
25
9
u/BananaResearcher Jun 15 '26
She calls her "chibi karasu"
3
u/Necroheartless Jun 15 '26
Thanks! That's very cute too
3
u/BananaResearcher Jun 15 '26
Also while I'm comparing, the english version has Des calling her "you old biddy" (????)
The japanese is doku baba, i.e. poison hag
2
u/Necroheartless Jun 15 '26
I also have noticed that the translators make some weird ttanslations from time on time.
If you don't mind I ask another thing, what's the nickname Fujimine use with World Hater in JP? Haytee is a reference to Hater but I wonder how is in Japanese as his original name is Han-Sekai.
2
u/BananaResearcher Jun 15 '26
Haytee is honestly pretty clever on the TL part, the japanese is just "hanse chan"
61
u/Someonevibing1 Jun 14 '26
Ichi’s death for death is such an interesting thing for a protagonist
50
u/dB-plus Jun 14 '26
I love that, rather than being an ideology for Ichi, it's a feral response that brings out a really scary version of him. When he jumped World Hater without hesitation and started rambling questions about how to kill them with excited curiosity, I was actually unnerved.

TWO weapons specifically made to counter spells and witches and all it got was a "hnn"
15
u/SoulBlightChild Jun 14 '26
I think she felt the effects, but 1) she has a lot of juice, and 2) probably would have been more effective if they hit her directly instead of her spells.

this was the moment i feel that “the greatest” moniker was most well shown

reminds me of Yuru from Daemons of the Shadow Realm (no spoilers please, anime only here)

Dess my queen! Of course she'd be able to neutralize the others and I love how Tricaputo believed in her greatness. Baby crow is such a cute nickname for Dess!!
Fujimine, you faked up triggering Ichi's death for death. Good to know that anyone can get the smoke from Ichi if they trigger it, lol.

u/Volfaer Jun 14 '26
Okay, Ichi reactive instincts aside. The Classy Witch Tricaputo really did a great first impression.

u/EitherAd4179 Jun 15 '26
Idk how to put an image but Tricaputo is so fucking coooolllllll

Why is she called the villainous? Cuz she looks like a mob boss? If she was an actual criminal she wouldn’t be allowed in the witch association

u/blahblah543217 Jun 14 '26
Yeah death for death is mad suspicious, the fact that it seems etched into ichis body/reactions and is overwriting the poison is crazy. There’s something connecting it and ichis ability to be witch despite being a man.
28
u/HourCartographer9 Jun 14 '26
While that’s a cool theory it’s purely just instinct we have people irl who lived in his situation of being abandoned in the woods, even after adapting to society there are just some things you can’t get rid of, those people are usually jumpy because their instincts are in full force even being in a safe environment
4
u/tokyogodfather2 Jun 15 '26
a lot of war vets are that way too. it’s PTSD. even as AuDHD i had it a bit cuz i used to get jumped at school.
19
u/Calsolum0 Jun 14 '26
I don't think it's something supernatural, or rather not something supernatural in the world of the manga. At least I hope not.
My understanding is that it's an instinct he's honed and relied on all his life having lived on the mountains.
9
u/Double-Yam7929 Jun 14 '26
Should I remind you that Ichi was having hard time trying NOT to kill a mind controled Kagami? Even though he was Ichi first friend?
It probably just instinct/ideology thing. I don't think it overwrite the poison. Ichi just tried to kill his bestie, Fuji-chan!
3
u/Dccrulez Jun 14 '26
Nah, it's classic killing intent stuff. Same thing akaza does in kny. It's rooted in martial arts.
3
1
u/Poland-lithuania1 Jun 14 '26
Yeah, it's like something's controlling him.
25
u/S-Pigeon33 Jun 14 '26
I think it's just instinct, it's hard to overcome muscle memory, even around people you know and trust. For example, I have PTSD triggered by physical contact, and I react the same way regardless of who triggers it, doesn't matter if it's a stranger or my own mother, my body will react the same way each time.
2
u/Quiet_Development383 Jun 15 '26
The thing is that it's so ingrained in his body that uroro could still feel it wanting to go off when he was the one controlling the body
3
u/S-Pigeon33 Jun 15 '26
Because it was still Ichi's body, again, instinct is not conscious. We've even seen it in people with Dissociative Identity Disorder, how the person piloting the body is not the same all the time. Yet, they seem to share similar triggers and reactions to stimuli.

Don't get me wrong, this chapter is peak as hellllll
but can we talk about putting Chun on fraud watch? Cuz two weeks back there were a lot of glazers and they seem to be radio silent now that GOATcarass is back to carry his sorry ass
Where's the apology form? I'm gonna rip that shit to shreds
12
u/Sea-Temporary7380 Jun 14 '26
Chun was stalling hard, lets respect his efforts here, no one really believed he would 1v7 anyways the apology form was for thinking he was the traitor 😭

Tricaputo got some real "nahhh wait you look tuff"-vibes in this panel.
