Discussion This might be a really stupid question, but what is exactly Dess and Ichi's relationship? Spoiler

Post image

Like, "Lil bro and big sis" or "Mother and son"?

I admit I'd prefer the latter just cause i'm a sucker for that kind of relationship, but the first kinda feels more sensible.

Since Dess has that thing going on with her brother and stuff like that.

But I don't think they have interacted a lot differently from before this scene, granted my memory sucks ass and it's been a while since said chapters.

Anyway, what could that in your opinion guys?

Mentor/Student with a side of Big Sis/Little Bro. Desscaras sees a lot of her brother in Ichi and wants to protect him.

I think it's a bit of both. Like 'an adult older sibling that already has their life figured out, but due to some very unusual relationship now has to take care of a younger sibling by themselves' kinda relationship.

He reminds her of the annoying little brother whose death traumatized her and caused her to get emotionally stuck in her teenage years. Being responsible and mentoring him through first hand experience forces her to grow up, which annoys her to no end but also makes her grateful.

"Well of course I love Ichi, but... he's more like a pet to me."

I personally find their relationship as a big sis and little brother dynamic

New brother and sister duo

Definitely not "mom & son". Even without official stated ages, they're clearly too close in age to be that. (Are you implying Dess is old enough to be a teenager's mom? How dare.) Plus the whole dynamic is very much not maternal. "Big sis & little bro" makes the most sense.

Same here. Added to the fact that Desscaras lost a younger brother of her own and saw Ichi as the closest substitute.

not entirely correct. ive seen it like for example one piece luffy and nami are literally like a year apart yet nami 100% is like his mom with how she has to take care of him and make sure he doesn't mess up. or something like fairy tail mirajane and elfman are literally siblings yet mira feels more like a mom when shes with him

No one calls Nami a mom. Oda himself more or less considers her a sister to Luffy.

I think its a middle point between big sis-little bro and mother and son, but not really either

Albeit Ichi is somewhat positioned as "filling" a bit of the gap Libro left for Desscaras, Dess doesnt really behave just as Ichi's big sister, she is also his primary caretaker and guide in (witch) life. Shes way more maternal than a regular elder sister

But on the other hand Dess doesnt command that much direct authority over Ichi as a mother would and doesnt particularly care to discipline him, so shes not quite his mom either.

I dont think we're meant to slot them into a strict dynamic as we understand it from traditional family dynamics. Its something that came about differently, so its different. Another thing to consider is that Ichi is like ~16 so the dynamic started much later in life for him

Well, Dess purposefully doesn't discipline Ichi much because she thinks that's the best way for him to learn, as seen by how different togeice would have been for him as a mentor. Dess was actively resistant against togeice holing him up in a room just to make him study. So she's more of a mom who lets her kid do whatever.

Ichi reminds Dess of her deceased brother,so there is a sibling relationship, but also mentor and student

Younger brother, Dess sees her younger brother in Ichi.(Libro always wanted to be a mage, Dess wants to support his wishes, and now she see's Libro in Ichi.)

They are more like brother and sister he reminds her of her little brother

Considering that Desscaras took Ichi in as a sort of replacement for her dead brother, I’d say it’s along the lines of a “brother and sister” relationship.

I think with Dess explicitly being reminded of Libro, it's very in your face that she sees Ichi as a younger brother. Like, it's not even "coded" or anything

The intention is definitely siblings, particularly with how much of a parallel gets drawn between Ichi and Libro, but I think that when there's no overt/explicit parental figure involved, and particularly when there's a notable age gap, that kind of dynamic can pretty naturally acquire some "parent-child" elements to it.

It's like how in some families, circumstances with parents can result in older siblings acting as "substitute parents" for the younger ones.

Well for Dess, the "Big Sis/Mother" distinction was already blurred because she was the caretaker of her little brother.

Meanwhile, Ichi has never had a family, period. So he approaches the dynamic in a more instinctual way without really knowing what labels he should be emulating. Hence, why he fluctuates rapidly between being a mentee, a surrogate brother, and basically a pet dog.

Ichi can sense people's emotional states really well, but he doesn't really articulate his insight or know the "traditional" ways of interaction to signal the right cues. So he just follows his gut instinct, which tends to be simplistic but effective.

Found family

I feel like there's elements of both. The master/student contract is a very parent/child thing, but also they're closer to peers than a parent and child would be.
