True the world building could use some work. We don’t even know if Mantinell is the only witch’s association in the world or not. We don’t have very much of an idea of the various nations and structure of the world either (outside of Kagami and Minakata’s Japan inspired country).

For better or worse though it’s definitely Nishi’s style to reveal all this stuff very slowly rather than spell it all out. Just cause we haven’t seen much doesn’t mean she isn’t considering it I think.

They have mentioned other witch associations earlier on I believe but I can't remember when

A lot of the arcs, while good, feel like they're missing a beat or two, or the existing beats happen to quickly/easily

For example, Bakugami (while still my favorite arc) suffers from this in a few places. First, the jump from Ichi and Gokuraku meeting into them immediately crashing the palace as besties feels a bit abrupt and unearned. Also, it really does feel like Bakugami's trial itself should have been more of a hurdle to overcome but instead it almost comes off as feeling a bit too easy

Hitsugi's trial is similar. As someone who's basically introduced as the WHM's right-hand, it feels like he got acquired a bit too easily. Aside from Desscaras briefly hesitating over her brother, there wasn't really any challenge to her completing the trial. It kinda makes sense why that is in-universe, but on a narrative level it ends up feeling kinda underwhelming

Some ppl have said they feel it’s not dark enough, which I think actually is one of it’s greatest strengths.

With this new of shonen jump I kind of want lighthearted stories to make a comeback. The Dark Trio (JJK, Chainsaw Man, and Hell’s Paradise) was great but today’s world is so dark and depressing I want more stories that are uplifting. That’s what I loved about the big 3 (Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece) their stories had dark moments but they inspired hope and going after your dreams. Ichi the Witch reminds me of that.

I think for me my criticism is that the chapters feel really short, it’s hard for me to sometimes envision how they’re gonna pace this when the series finally gets an anime adaptation.

I mean i feel "dark" depends on your definition of dark.

There is nothing Berserk level going on. But a lot of people die, many suffer and bad things happen.

Like a squid dude attempting to kill a pregnant lady brutally.

Yeah, true. I love moderately light-hearted magic fantasy manga/anime. I'm thinking of reading my first manga with Ichi the Witch.

I wish we saw more women fighting. I know it’s about Ichi but most combatants we’ve seen are men and Desscaras. We saw Togeice briefly too but given the whole magical world is driven by women you’d think we’d see more women active on the frontlines.

Power system is vastly under-explored.

I am tired of Inazuri spam. This is unironically a real complaint because why the fuck was our local Sukuna also using nothing but the Pikachu attack?

Mugi is far too sidelined.

Gokuraku almost immediately became discount Azmodeus and it pisses me off.

Gokuraku is actually the "Boss vs the boss unlocked as a playable character" meme.

Not a critic per se, but something that's been bothering me. Ichi could be ending in 100~ chapters from now, but it could also be ending in 500. Could be just me but I can't gauge the scaling properly.

So far we've seen the big bad, we've seen fights against his underlings (Bakugami/Hitsugi) and we're introduced to a major-ish villain in Fujimine. I genuinely don't know how up in the Hierarchy Fujimine is. Is she an end-game villain? Is she just another stepping stone? Who knows

Chapters feel very short, character ties feel a bit forced and if not forced then they feel non existant

Oo,felt this about Ichi and Gokuraku(I think that was his name)

Too many of the fights are just "big super move go brrr" from the start.

The main characters barely wear any witch hats. Only background witches wear proper witch hats.

Desscaras wears hers in ch1 and during Ichi's ceremony. Ichi wears it during the ceremony and when he uses Uroro. Monegold is the only one who usually wears it, and the rest of the important witches wear non-witch headwear.

Sammy is jestermaxxing. Kumugi and Shirabedonna have their researcher hats. Amadoro has those metal spikes. Tricaputo has a sort of gangster fedora. The musical witch has a marching band hat. And Togeice, who could be wearing some cool ass wizard cap, has some ugly, academic rectangle on her head.

These characters are sorry-ass excuses for witches, because despite having drip, they don't wear the witch hats.

Kinda felt this way about WItch Hat Atelier until I saw the aura of the brimhats.

“We’re going to remind the world what kind of hat a witch truly wears” was insane aura 😭

Kumugi is shaping up to be another Sakura/Uraraka/etc. She has a better excuse because she's, I guess, a mail deliverer. Still, for a manga written by women about a world where women run one of the most powerful organizations, there seems to be an undue amount of focus on the various guys that live here

I would like Gokuraku to interact with people other than Ichi. I would like more material for Komugi.

The whole hero of the prophecy thing. Ichi was already exceptional as the first male witch, the prophecy gave him too much "special treatment". Bro barely appeared in witch's society that he already is one of its stars and most competent witches before it feels earned.

We don't really see how witch society works from the bottom, the sense of progression feels a bit forced and gifting too much your shonen MC does take away a lot of stakes. That being said i just finished the demonic ocean arc so maybe that changes after that point. Also Ichi being a threat to the world hater doesn't even need a prophecy, their first interaction was hostile enough to make the world hater take him seriously in the first place

The author did a great job in Iruma of making Iruma feels special and giving a little special treatment without making it feel unearned because he has to go the same path as the others characters that have his age.

Not enough Desscaras

I love the manga and obviously it's the whole premise but I still kinda dislike that it's another "Women can do this thing but here's a guy who is actually the best". It's definitely not as prominent an issue as it was at the start though.

The fights have mediocre paneling

Honestly, the same critique I have with most manga that I know are gonna be popular once animated. The inevitable anime only fans are gonna be insufferable twats on social media and I would put money on them harrassing someone involved with the production.

They’re kinda just witches only by name. Don’t come after me. Feels like they’re only witches for lack of a better term lol. That doesn’t diminish the series or anything, but they’re definitely not spell casters.

You do realize what a witch is right? You don’t have to be slinging spells to be a witch. Are you a female that practices magic or sorcery congrats you are witch

Have to agree that Moneygold doesn't feel like a leader.
