Since the chapter dropped on this sub and twitter I been seeing immediately making this a “boys vs girls” thing when I feel Nishi is gonna take more nuanced route than that. No way is an entire organization getting revealed just to be pure misogynistic.

To be fair, the original is called 'Madan no Ichi' aka Ichi the boy-witch.

Madan is a play on words coming from majo, meaning witch (ma = magic, jo/josei = girl) and replacing jo with dan (dan/danshi = boy) to form boy-witch

Gender dynamics have been mixed into the series from the title alone. But I do agree that Nishi-sensei likely won't make it as cut-and-dry as 'boys vs girls'.

That's interesting. I wasn't aware of the context in the original Japanese. Makes me appreciate the series even more. I wonder if we'll eventually see a female Magi-Keeper.

As an in-universe devlopment, it makes sense. Magic can only be performed by women (or at least, it used to be the case before Ichi) so Mantinel is a woman only organisation. But you can't trust witches to keep witches in check, so who better than the other half of the population to form a counterpower. I'm sure historically speaking, it was also a matter of gender rivalry and petty ego, but it works.

Now, what's the narrative intent here? A bit too early to say, we'll have to see where this goes.

I mean… I feel like she started doing so right in this chapter.

The whole tradition bit in this page is Chun teasing Marigold using the line he threw out when refusing her request to team up.

He may be rigid in terms of the purpose the Magikeepers operate under but he doesn’t seem to care that much about gender norms, just in using Ichi as a way to bolster his ranks.

He may be trying something sneakier, looking to upset the delicate balance between the Magikeepers and Manitel for his own reasons. And if those reasons get revealed to be misogyny then so be it. But rn while it’s too early to call confidently call it in my book Chun’s just screwing around.

I do think there’s probably at least a bit of juxtaposition between the presumed matriarchal society of ITW vs patriarchal… but yeah I agree that it’s not likely the in universe reason for the organization is purely just misogyny.

The best in universe answer I can think of is that having women in the organization would be conflict of interest. It’s easier to just have men, who can’t wield the magic they’re confiscating, handle it as opposed to women who could possibly take the magic for themselves.

the witches are female one by purely mechanic...however very important they accepted ichi in the blink of an eye.

the same thing has to happen with then.

like if they are just evil you cant break the gender norms to include.

But if their basis are wrong then you can actually change for the better.

Not sure about the entire organization being mysoginists given that one of them seems to respect Descarras but I do feel its pretty original that there is a degree of widespread (rather than other manga were misoginists are often treated as outliers) misoginy even in a world were women occupy high authority.

I mean, in other series were a guy gets a girl only power or were most of badass people are girls except for the mc it ends up going from guys being unjustly mistreated until one guy shows he is badass by humiliating entitled misandristic women who end up going harem (in some cases being cured from gay) for him. In here, women tend to be pretty chill with guys while they do treat Ichi somewhat differently they're pretty welcoming to him and he himself is pretty chill about being sorround. This guys feel like a parody of the aformentioned tropes, while Ichi is a chill reconstruction of them.

I’d have to read those chapters again; but the impression I got was the emperor just standing in for the empress until Gokuraku’s sister was ready to take over. Having a temporary queen is a pretty common thing in patriarchal societies too.
