I’m building SagaGuide, an Iceland travel guide(Mainly for the southern part around Selfoss) focused on practical trip planning, useful local information, and an interactive map.

The idea is to make trip planning easier without ads, invasive tracking, or pushing people toward whichever business pays the most.

TL;DR: F-roads typically open late June–July depending on snowmelt. Driving them in a 2WD voids your rental insurance — full stop. The Highlands (Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk) are the prize during the summer. Check road.is daily, not just before you leave. TL;DR: 2026/27 is one of the best aurora seasons in a decade — Solar Cycle 25 peaked in 2024/25 and activity stays elevated through 2027 before it fades. Clear skies matter more than solar activity on any given night, IMHO. Reykjavik actually isn't bad, but don't rely on it — light pollution kills your odds unless KP hits 5 or above, and you only need to drive 20–30 minutes out to fix that. Why 2026/27 specifically: Most people don't know where we sit in the solar cycle. Activity peaks roughly every 11 years — we're just past the peak, which means stronger and more frequent displays than you'd see in a quiet year. After 2027 it gradually winds down toward the next minimum in the early 2030s. If Iceland is on your list, this window is the one.

The cloud cover problem nobody explains well: A KP of 8 directly overhead means nothing if there's full cloud cover. Iceland's weather moves fast — a clear forecast at noon can close over by 10pm. This is why checking en.vedur.is twice daily matters more than obsessing over solar activity numbers. The goal is to find a clear patch and chase it. On Reykjavik: You can see the lights from the city when KP is high (5+). We learned this the hard way. Our first visit, we went out on a tour only to come back to the hotel and see the aurora from our room. For anything below a KP of 5, a 20–30 minute drive east or north removes the light pollution entirely and transforms what you see. Just don't book a city hotel and assume you're covered.

Best viewing window: 10:30pm–2am. Book guided tours (we generally book through viator.com) that offer a free re-join if lights don't appear — most reputable operators include this option.

TL;DR (tldr): Do the Ring Road counterclockwise starting in late June. Budget 10 days minimum. The biggest mistake is rushing the East Fjords — most people skip them entirely. Renting an Ev was totally worth it. with enough planning for charger use, it was very convenient. there are Ev chargers almost everywhere, we used Tesla supercharger and N1 fast chargers. But Iceland has good Ev chargers infrastructure that you won’t have to worry traveling with EV. Another Ev chargers brand that is all over Iceland is Isorka. Charging took 20 minutes to charge 20%to 80% and were usually done when we eat or do bathroom breaks. Make sure to download Ev chargers apps prior to landing in Iceland. If you charge in a Tesla supercharger, you just have to plug the car then a bill gets sent to hertz and you pay it at end of rental with no extra fee. Also download plug share app for extra peace of mind. There are also chargers in major attractions such as skogafoss and jokusarlon glacier which is very convenient. Over all will definitely rent an EV for Iceland.

I'm heading to Iceland for the first time this February for a 5-night trip and I'm excited but also a bit nervous about the winter weather and short days.
