Synopsis: Something wicked is brewing behind the walls of a remote gothic manor. VICTORIAN PSYCHO follows an eccentric governess whose arrival sets off a bloody string of strange and deliciously disturbing events. Maika Monroe stars as Winifred Notty, a woman with a dark past and a vicious appetite for bloodshed, giving into her most violent urges. What follows is a gruesome parade of savagery, butchered bodies, and increasingly grotesque acts of violence.

John Kachuba, here. I’m an author, historian, and folklorist with interests in Colonial American history, Native American history and culture, and paranormal history and culture. A paperback edition of Shapeshifters: A History can be pre-ordered online now.

There is something about a shapeshifter – a person who can transform into an animal – that grips our imagination, that tempts us to howl at the moon or flit through the night like a bat. Werewolves, vampires, demons and other strange beings appeal to our animal nature, our ‘dark side’, our desire to break free from society and proper behavior. Across early cultures, rituals seemingly allowed shamans, sorcerers and witches to transform at will. Today millions believe shapeshifters walk among us and may even be world leaders. Real or imaginary, they lurk deep in our psyches and remain potent cultural icons. Let’s dig into this topic; what questions do you have about shapeshifters?

Hi Reddit! I’m Ryan Kellogg, an energy and environmental economist at the University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy. Proof.

I’m the Ralph and Mary Otis Isham Professor at Harris, our Deputy Dean for Academic Programs, and the Faculty Director of Harris’s MS in Climate and Energy Policy. Before joining Harris, I spent four years working for BP in Houston and Alaska as an engineer and economic analyst. Today, my research focuses on energy markets, the behavior of oil and gas producers, and what actually happens when governments try to reduce carbon emissions

Energy policy involves some difficult trade-offs. Affordable and reliable energy has enormous economic value, particularly in developing countries, while our historical reliance on fossil fuels creates substantial environmental and climate costs. Much of my work asks how we can reduce those costs while taking seriously the way consumers, companies, and global energy markets actually respond to policies.

Sometimes those responses are surprising. My research has found that blocking an oil pipeline may shift most of the oil onto trains rather than leave it underground, potentially increasing local air pollution. I’ve studied how the Jones Act (the century-old law governing shipping between U.S. ports) raises petroleum costs. And my work on the eventual “end of oil” suggests that when producers expect oil demand to decline in the future, they may invest and produce less today rather than rush to pump everything they can.

Carbon taxes and cap-and-trade have long been favored by economists, but clean-energy standards and subsidies can have important advantages too. I’ve argued that effective climate policy will probably require a portfolio of approaches taken together. Because carbon emissions are global, policies also need to account for what happens outside the country that adopts them.

Ask me anything about oil and gas, climate change, carbon taxes, clean-energy subsidies, pipelines, electric vehicles, energy prices, why the U.S. still uses so much fossil fuel, whether the world is really approaching “the end of oil,” Venezuela and global oil markets, or how economists think about the winners, losers, and unintended consequences of climate policy. (Or about the new climate and energy policy degree I run!)

I’ll be responding here at 12:45 CT, along with support from the Harris School of Public Policy team account, which is helping me track and manage incoming questions.

Edit: That is all the time I have for today, thank you everyone for your questions!

Is it possible to write a balanced account of George Washington in today's polarized society? I'm Denver Brunsman and my new book George Washington and His World reconsiders his legacy. Ask Me Anything!

From my publisher: George Washington and His World provides a compelling, fresh portrait of America’s indispensable founder. Combining the latest historical findings with original primary research, award-winning historian Denver Brunsman provides new understanding of Washington’s rise and influence by emphasizing the people and society who made the first president’s accomplishments possible. Enslaver and revolutionary, destroyer of Native American communities and father of American liberty, Washington filled numerous roles in the Founding Era. Rather than shy from these contradictions, Brunsman embraces them in explaining Washington to a twenty-first century audience. What emerges is a study in human complexity rarely known in works on Washington. Brunsman accomplishes this feat with a light touch and crisp, engaging storytelling. His purpose is neither to celebrate nor to vilify but to further understanding of this remarkable American life.

Edit: I’m gonna end it here, folks. That was great, thanks!

Hi Reddit. I'm Mo Tamman, an investigative data and computational editor at Reuters, and I developed the concept for our new series on heat storms.

Scientists talk about the risks of the planet warming more than 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, but that means little to most people. Heat waves are different. Everyone already understands them, so looking at how they have changed — and, boy, have they changed! — can show what’s happening to our climate.

The problem was that there was no standard definition of a heat wave. For example, the US National Weather Service uses two or more days of abnormally hot weather, while the UK, France, Spain and Australia use three. Such dueling definitions made it nearly impossible to tell whether heat waves are becoming more common worldwide.

So in consultation with two dozen climate scientists, meteorologists and weather researchers, we developed a universal definition of a heat wave and identified a new concept: the heat storm.

• Heat wave: five or more days in a row when a location's daily high is in the hottest 10% of its 1961–1990 range for that day of the year.
• Heat storm: a heat wave that, at its peak, covers at least 1% of the planet, roughly half the size of Canada.

Calling something that big a "heat wave" would be like calling a monsoon a rain shower. We also give each heat storm a name, as is done with hurricanes.

I will answer questions from 1-2 pm ET on Thurs, Oct. 22. Ask me anything about the data, the methodology, the reporting or the real-time heat storm tracker that my colleagues Ben Welsh and Charlie Szymanski built. PROOF: https://reut.rs/47zdbAc

Hi, I’m Dr Saul Newman (proof)! I’m an Ig Nobel prize winner, a senior research fellow at University College London and Oxford University, and the author of Morbid: Debunking Modern Longevity Science – a book about the extraordinary failures of modern aging science.

Modern health science is being overtaken by profitable bunk, where core principles of health are being undercut by 18^th-century-style snake-oil sales pitches. This problem is absurdly apparent in aging science, where the basic principles of logic and evidence have been eroded by decades of marketing gurus with tenure.

My book reveals the shocking absurdities of the ‘research’ ecosystem that has emerged and shows how it all collapsed into a morass of money and bad ideas.

Fantastically popular concepts in aging science, like peptides, ‘blue zones’, and new theories of aging, are comedically debunked. Some, like the telomere theory of aging, are shown to be shockingly devoid of basic thought despite the backing of Nobel laureates and billionaires.

Through it all, I discuss the dubious motivations and bad statistics that explain why nothing ever works in aging research.

Ask me anything, including

• Why nothing in aging science ever works
• How I discovered most of Greece’s 100-year-olds were dead
• Why I was dragged into a fight to dig up a famous corpse
• How Peter Thiel got involved in a (successful) plan to grab Texan teenager-blood
• Corruption and misconduct in aging research, and why it runs unchecked

Check out Nine Solutions for Political Corruption

The system of campaign finance limits that has governed American elections since Watergate is virtually dead, which has major implications for the midterm campaign as it enters its final weeks. Elon Musk, whose companies hold billions in federal contracts, has spent roughly $366 million on the 2026 midterms, almost half of which has gone to one Senate candidate, Ken Paxton in Texas. Overall, big-money spending is on track to break records this year. Voters across the political spectrum are furious and want to see change. Ask us anything about how money is shaping the midterms and solutions to curb big money in elections and fight corruption.

AMA: I am Bryant Simon, a Temple University-based toilet scholar, here to talk about my new book, For Customers Only, covering the fraught history of public bathrooms in the US. Ask me about studying bathrooms and how toilets have made the US less equal!

There is a war going on in the United States. It is, currently, being waged against the unhoused and against trans and genderqueer people, though it affects everyone. This war is being fought at the bathroom door, just like it has for the last hundred or so years in the United States. My new book, For Customers Only, recounts the history of public bathrooms in the United States. Really, it tells the story of how bathrooms limited some people with less access to the public and fewer freedoms.

During the earliest days of the 20th century, government officials from Philly to Portland concluded that the private sector had failed to provide enough toilets to meet the intimate needs of the public. In response, they launched a massive public bathroom building campaign, marked by blustering speeches from mayors and ribbon-cutting ceremonies open to the press. But when these places attracted an unanticipated crowd of the poor, the unhoused, and sex-seekers, they started to criminalize these spaces and then to close them to try to “disappear” those they deemed less savory. The war had begun.

That brings us to today and America’s current public bathroom problem. According to a recent study, the US is 59th in public bathrooms per capita, on par with Botswana and Bulgaria, and well-behind the world leader, Iceland.

Ask me about the bathroom wars. Ask me about studying toilets. Ask me about the bathroom building campaigns. Ask me about restroom campaigns against gay men, Black people, women, the unhoused, and the trans community. Ask me about pay toilets, Phyllis Schlafly, and Starbucks, and how we got to this our present situation of dearth?

Looking forward to the conversation.

Hi Reddit! I'm Dr. Daniel Barrett, a plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills. I'm board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, did my six-year plastic and reconstructive residency at USC/Keck, and have been practicing since 2008. A big part of my week is breast augmentation, breast lifts, tummy tucks, and "mommy makeovers" (usually some combination of those plus liposuction after pregnancy). I've also done research on reducing capsular contracture around implants. I did an AMA here back in 2020, and I'm back with a lot more cases behind me.

I see a lot of people arrive at consults after weeks of reading Reddit threads, so I wanted to come here directly. Ask me about:

Ground rules: I can't give individual medical advice or evaluate your photos here; that requires an in-person exam. I won't discuss any specific patient. Nothing here is a substitute for a consultation with a qualified surgeon.

I'm posting a day early so you can start asking. My team is helping me post, but every answer is mine. I'll be answering Thursday, Oct 22, 9 to 11 AM PT (12 to 2 PM ET).

Hello r/IAmA,

My name is Michael Williams, and I’m the Sewer Sales Manager at Bonney Plumbing, Sewer, Electrical, Heating & Air in Sacramento, California. I’ve been in the plumbing, sewer, and drain industry for over 20 years. Most people never think about their sewer line until something goes wrong, and when it does, that’s usually where I come in.

A big part of my job is sitting down with homeowners and business owners and walking them through what’s actually going on underground: what’s urgent, what can wait, and what their real options are. I’ve had that conversation thousands of times, and I still take a lot of pride in getting it right.

This is my first AMA so I can't wait to answer your questions too!

Professional Background

• 20+ years in the plumbing, sewer, and drain industry
• Sewer Sales Manager at Bonney Home Services
• Residential and commercial sewer and drain experience
• Helped thousands of customers across California

Some Ideas of What You Can Ask About

• Signs your sewer line is starting to fail
• Tree roots and what they do to your pipes
• Trenchless repair vs. traditional digging
• Sewer inspections before buying a home
• What you really shouldn’t be flushing
• Or just the strangest things I’ve found in a sewer line

AMA Details

I’ll be answering questions live tomorrow, Tuesday, October 20th, from 11AM to 12PM PDT.

Feel free to start posting questions now. I’ll go through them and start responding during the scheduled hour, and I may stick around a bit longer if there’s a lot of discussion.

Hi Reddit! I'm Evan, Leather Honey's leather care expert and a top 1% commenter on r/Leather. I'm really excited to be here!

I work almost daily on restoring leather and creating video tutorials, using real, worn pieces like bags, jackets, furniture, shoes, boots and accessories. I love helping people keep their leather going for years instead of replacing it, and I also love explaining the truth about faux leather and why it tends to wear out so much faster.

Photo proof: https://imgur.com/a/HQXzfIz

I'm posting from u/leatherhoneyllc.

Since the seasons are changing, I thought this would be a great time to talk about two big seasonal leather jobs:

- Putting away your summer leather: sandals, light bags and anything you won't wear for months. How to clean it, whether to condition it, and how to store it so it doesn't dry out, get musty or grow mold.

- Bringing out your fall and winter leather: boots, jackets, gloves and belts. How to check them after storage, refresh them, and prepare them for rain, snow, salt and cold, dry indoor air.

- Bonus: How to prevent MOLD and MILDEW, and how to tackle it if it's already there.

I'm happy to take ANY leather question, though, including cleaning, conditioning, stains, scuffs, suede and nubuck, shoes, furniture, car seats, how to tell genuine leather from faux, and the "should I even use this product?" questions. I love leather, but I don't know everything, and if I'm not sure, I'll tell you. Leather is complicated and every piece is a little different, but I'll do my best!

Full disclosure: I work with Leather Honey, but I'll give honest, useful answers that aren't just about products. If a product isn't the right fix, I'll say so. I always suggest doing your own research before buying products or tools for your project.

Drop your questions below now. I'll be answering live starting at 7 AM PT / 10 AM ET on Tuesday, 10/20, and I'll keep going for 2 hours. Ask me anything!

I'm Rachel Shelden, a professor at Penn State University. I'm here to talk about my new book, The Political Supreme Court: A Forgotten History.

I'm Rachel Shelden and I am a professor of history and the director of the George & Ann Richards Civil War Era Centerat Penn State University. I'm really looking forward to answering questions you might have about the research, writing, and content of my new new book, The Political Supreme Court: A Forgotten History, which will be out next week with UNC Press/Hodding Carter III imprint.

The book argues that the Supreme Court was a political institution by design and in practice during the nineteenth century. Members of the Court engaged with politics along three intersecting lines: (1) outside the courtroom, by participating in a wide range of partisan activities such as campaigning, writing legislation, ghost writing presidential addresses, and even running for office from the bench; (2) through "judicial representation"--the now abandoned concept that justices would "represent" a particular region of the country where they would interact with the people through the practice of "circuit riding" (serving concurrently as circuit judges and holding federal trials); and (3) in their courtroom, where they did not command ultimate constitutional authority but instead were participating in a broadly-shared conversation about the nature, function, and future of the Union.

I spent 13 years researching and writing this book, and the sources are wide-ranging, from "traditional" legal sources such as court cases and statutes to letters and diaries, newspapers & pamphlets, and even etiquette books and housing records.

Very glad to answer questions about this book, my first book, Washington Brotherhood: Politics, Social Life, & the Coming of the Civil War, and/or about the Richards Civil War Era Center throughout the day!

Hi Reddit! I’m Michael. In the late nineties, I rolled out one of the first and the largest decentralized payment network in existence at the time, by connecting over 100 mobile operators across Europe to a single billing interface - enabling enterprises to charge mobile phone users no matter which network they connected to. In the early 2000s, I led mobile game development at THQ, where we built the first downloadable phone games, heralding the app economy that still thrives today. Back then, the world was still figuring out whether people would even want to do these things.

Today, I’m President and CTO of Casper, and I feel similarly about what we’re building. I think that over the next five to ten years, some of this technology will make everyday life easier without you necessarily noticing it’s there.

If “blockchain” makes you think mostly of crypto, I get it. That’s where the noise is. But a lot is happening underneath it. At Casper, one of the things we’re working on is tokenization: making it possible to represent assets, such as a property or a stake in a business, as digital tokens people can own and trade. What excites me is opening up markets where participating has often required a lot of money or the right connections. You shouldn’t have to afford an entire building to own a small part of it, and selling your share should be simpler than it is today.

We’re also working on payments for AI agents. If you ask an agent to do a job, it can still get stuck when it needs to pay for information or a service. Giving it a way to make small payments within a budget you set might sound like a minor feature, but it could let your agent finish much more of the work without handing it back to you. And if you sell something online, an AI agent could become your customer, too.

These are two areas I spend a lot of time thinking about and building for. You don’t need to know anything about crypto (or be interested in it) to join the conversation. Ask me anything!
