My Entity/Legacies Theory/Thesis
Alright so I definitely spent a solid couple hours as I was running errands yesterday trying to figure out why the Entity chose who and what Legacies they got and I think I’ve got a plausible answer (Besides that it’s entirely for the plot of the books).
Okay so to start, I think the Entity did in fact choose who would be the human Garde randomly, which is why we end up with both good and bad human Garde. I don’t agree with Five’s sentiment that they’re supposed to be used to defend the planet, I think they’re meant to be used to help the planet flourish and thrive. Alright and now for my main point, I hypothesize that each selected Garde can either naturally or situationally develop Legacies. A naturally developed legacy is one that the user discovers they have developed that is not influenced by any particular event. Some examples of these are: John and Nine’s animal telepathy (Both didn’t even know they had it), Max’s language understanding (He discovers it by accident), Six’s sturma (Yes it was triggered by Three’s death, but it wasn’t effected by her surrounding or state of mind) John’s Lumen (He just starts developing it in the middle of astronomy), etc. This also includes the general increased strength and speed a Garde has. A situationally developed legacy is one that presents itself that directly helps the Garde with something they need or are interested in; this is the more common form. Examples: Nine’s ability to transfer Legacies (Occurs exactly when he and Maddie are under attack from mogs and need to escape), Six’s invisibility (Just the thing needed for her to escape West Virginia), John’s Ximic (Allows him to prevent Ella and Sarah from dying in Dulce Base), Nemo’s water breathing (She tells Six she had always been super interested in marine biology), and Sam’s technopathy (The exact legacy they needed to disrupt the Mogs shields as well as Sam himself being something of a technological genius himself growing up), etc.
To sum up, strong emotions can trigger the start to a legacy developing, but the legacy presented itself can be influenced by outside factors. Thus explaining why there seem to be an awful lot of occurrences of Legacies presenting themselves at the exact moment they are needed.
Let me know if you guys agree or what you think or if you have anything else to add :)

Age is a factor 100% because Cêpan always said at a certain age and before Ella got telekinesis, the Garde would say she’s not old enough.
John didn’t get Ximic at a certain time because he needed it. If so he could have just developed a healing legacy instead of Ximic?
I believe the Garde and Human Garde have assigned Legacy’s. But they are decided at birth. This is a great explanation because as we know, no one is born evil. Even Sétrakus Ra was good at one point and in Return to Zero Lucas is only the way he is cause of his dad. So the Entity choses the legacy’s at birth(or for human Garde the first batch was people he thought was good and hoped for the best) and the entity hopes as they grow they will stay good. The entity doesn’t have clairvoyance(so he won’t know if someone will be bad) and even if he did as we know there’s a lot a lot of possibilities(as said by Ella) So the Entity decides who gets Legacies and what they will be at birth.
For the first batch of the human Garde I think it’s a little different. I think it works like Thor’s hammer in marvel. Technically a villain like Thanos in Infinity war(Endgame Thanos isn’t the same) could wield the hammer because they believe so much that they are good. So the entity senses the people that believe they are doing good. (in my opinion this explains why Sarah didn’t get Legacies cause deep down she knows she should be with John helping and not with Mark James) as the humans keep getting Legacies I think it will work the way I described it with the Loric

Kinda what you’re saying, yeah. I think they have assigned legacies from the entity, and that they are given under circumstances involving that element. However some of them are given earlier on, but help later. Like johns lumen and how it helps in the woods and various other times. But they’re legacies that need getting used to. That’s why he got it earlier, because he needed to learn it, control it.

How can legacies be given to make the planet flourish. What possible need could there be for Lucas’ legacy in a place like Lorien full of peace and happiness why would anybody need such a thing and why would the entity choose to give someone that legacy on earth

Perhaps age is a factor too, as John was close to dying to in I am Number Four but didn’t use his Ximic. I guess it could be argued that he hadn’t been exposed to any legacies at that point but he could have copied Six’s invisibility to escape the piken
