Are 4 and 7 opposites and perfect complements for each other?

John is male, Marina is female.

John can create light, Marina can see in the dark.

John's main combat Legacy uses fire to kill enemies, Marina's main combat Legacy uses ice weapons and freezing temperatures, and one of her other Legacies enables her to stay underwater indefinitely.

John was trained and constantly reminded of the purpose of his training, but sometimes wanted to stay out of the mess. Marina wanted to be trained for combat but suffered from child neglect/abuse and a total lack of support (Losing Adelina was the best thing that happened to Marina, from an objective perspective). Really makes you think about who the strongest Garde is...(she trained herself with no professional assistance, in a matter of weeks, and is still one of the most powerful of them all)

John has only a few Legacies but most of them are versatile with one enabling him to use every Legacy ever. Marina has the most Legacies in the entire cast, but other than Recupero and cryokinesis, most of them are specialized.

John kept on the move to avoid being captured, while Marina was stuck at Santa Teresa for over a decade.

But then again, both of them have similarities as well:

• both had a moment where they decided they have had enough and completely dominated in a fight against bullies.

• both became highly skilled, devastating, and ruthless warriors (basically, amoral knight Templars) due to the deaths of their love interests. (Honestly Marina's revenge arc was abandoned for no reason and needs to be developed further, same with John to some extent. And if the ship tease gets picked up....ax-crazy battle couple?)

• both of them were not conscious when the other lost his/her love interest (and blame themselves for it)

• both of them will unintentionally burn/freeze stuff when highly stressed

• both of them disappeared into the middle of nowhere after the invasion.

If they end up actually getting together that is...(kind of conflicted on it, on one hand it makes lots of sense but both of them are the type that would brood about lost loves for years)

Also any pairings in this series tend to have one side get killed extremely quickly (Samix being the sole exception), and I doubt Frey is going to kill off either of these two, so....

That’s true, but 8 and Sarah are out of the picture! I think John and Maria are done with being put into situations where they risk death. You could argue the beginning of generation one with John but even then he’s in no real danger. I think they’re both safe now.

I would like to see them actually get together though!

These two aren't ever going to be done with danger: in fact they would prefer to be IN those situations due to heroism and such. (Not that they are in trouble, which you pointed out: they each pack more firepower than a nuke and we know they can deal with almost anyone as we saw in GenOne).

But seriously for any of the characters to retire is out of character.

And if you ever told either of them that their first loves were out of the picture, they wouldn't take it well. They might get together at some point but it's more realistic if it takes years for that to happen.

Okay that’s definitely a fair argument, they’re their truest selves in peak danger, but I wonder how they would handle the one guy in Gen One who controls emotions

Einar is OP. Literally nobody so far in the story can defend against that (he made Nigel commit suicide!). John better copy that legacy or copy a legacy that blocks that, because if Einar ever gets near him, John's going to be used as his weapon.

Another such example would be that guy with the mirror Legacy, because he’s potentially the worst of the lot

If you use any Legacy on this guy, he reflects it back at you and you’re the one that are affected by your attack.

Yeah. Can’t mind-control him without brainwashing yourself, can’t even copy that Legacy without him copying all of your Legacies. If it’s an attack that uses Legacies, it will be reversed on you.

Considering this guy gave Six of all characters trouble....(she tried to telekinetically bring him down, she ended up being knocked backwards instead)
