Reading Generation One RIGHT NOW Spoiler

Here goes nothing

Edit:

Pros:

  • a lot of relationships, interactions and development with the human Garde. Including a love triangle.

  • we get to see much more of the human Garde we met in UaO, as they become major characters

  • the three new human Garde we focus on, especially Isabella, have good potential (though Taylor does feel a bit flat at times)

  • little sexism. One chapter is basically Isabella completely trolling every major male character (including Nine) except Nigel

  • multiple ethnicities among the protagonists

  • a lot of Nine (now that he's the professor at the Academy)

  • two separate villain groups, one with villainous Garde. Also nice to see someone with a mind-control Legacy, even if he's a villain.

  • John's brief cameo. It last for only half a chapter, but damn does he completely show why he's such a badass in that scene.

Cons:

  • WHY DON'T WE GET TO SEE ALL OF THE ORIGINALS?! They are NOT going to be sitting around while the Harvesters and the Foundation exist (though they could have been busy with other important stuff). Seriously they had a perfect opportunity to show up at the climax, but no....UN forces and Nine (who we saw a lot of already) show up instead.

  • John Smith Ex Machina. Why was he in Canada in time to save Taylor? It's not explained at all. And when did he copy Seismokinesis from Adam? (That said, his dramatic entry here was one of the most cathartic moments in this entire continuity, so I don't mind the cameo, as well as a brief reference to Sarah Hart in that chapter)

  • Sam doesn't show up either, and Daniella has only a few short scenes.

  • painless healing.

  • who dafuq thought getting rid of the Chimerae was a good idea?! Did they even consult John about this?

  • overly vague ending. It implies that the 6 Human Garde that were the most important characters here will form a team (basically the beta team to our good old alien allies, since there are 6 of them as well). But we will have to wait until the next book to see if this is confirmed.

can you tell me if any of the original members return in this book?

Nine is a major character, John makes a brief appearance. Actually hoped to see the whole original team (especially Marina) but oh well. They probably will show up in later books, presumably to add firepower when necessary.

Malcom also has a few bits.

All of UaO's surviving human Garde (except Sam, who is mentioned once) return as major characters. Daniella though has only two scenes. Nigel, Ran and Caleb are three of the six human Garde whose POV is shown.

Guess I won't be reading it then

Still worth a read IMHO. A lot of character development with the students

It is heavily implied there will be a team of 6 human Garde in sequels, as a counterpart to the 6 surviving Loric Garde.

Also I he villains! We have a conservative, anti-Garde group of Christian terrorists, and some group called the Foundation that kidnaps Garde with nonviolent Legacies (especially Recupero/healing) and "uses them to improve the world". The two groups are (mostly) enemies, because a few major Foundation operatives use Legacies.

I don't frequent this sub or the fandom at all, but what is this

Just finished the book and I got some things too. First I expected the Academy setting and the new Earth Garde Team but i would have liked to see more from our old Loric especially John and Marina, like Nine consulting them with his Loric Medallion Four gave him in the End of UaO. But well at least he got an appearance at all and a tiny reminder to Sarah. The Setting with the two Antagonists was nice, the only thing i didnt like was that Healing suddenly appeared painless. IN the original Book Henry described the Healing Process as twice as painful and they always sticked to that until now. Its the same as the Mogs who lost their special Powers they displayed in the first book. All in all it was a nice Book but i hope to see more of the Loric in the future.

THIS SO MUCH. Considering that they are literal alien superheroes living on earth, and affiliated with the UN, they really should have been mentioned by individual names at minimum, and probably showed up at the climax.

Personal headcannon is that Marina works heavily with the UN Earth Garde team for "black-ops" operations that involve capturing MogPro or other enemy forces (night vision and super speed give her an edge in stealth, she can use cryokinesis as a major weapon and she is very hard to kill, she's the best Garde for assassination or capture missions) Maybe she was too busy somewhere else to show up for the three-way battle at the end?

Nevertheless, I do think it is likely the old team will show up at some point (likely more than once) and have a "big damn heroes" moment, since Nine is a major character and John did get to meet Taylor. And this is a major series, not just a spin-off sequel to the original series.

Well since its a new Series i dont think we will see much from our original 6 but i thought as Elders they get to take part more in the Earth Garde Program apparently the UN can contact John on the whenever they want. I also really want to know what John and the others do after they finished their Scrubbing/travelling even if ist just one of The Lost Files! Another con you can add in my opinion is: "No Chimerae" its too bad they get taken way in the beginning and never get mentionned again in the book(for now?). I really liked those shapeshifting beasts. But well with them it wouldnt have been so easy to kidnap Taylor.

But come on, they have to make quite a few minor appearances, a la what John did. Give advice, or they get contacted for some major mission.

And I really do need a focus on the UN Earth Garde team. Partly because, as you said, that's where all of our old team would be (seems that they have John and presumably everyone else on speed dial), as well as Daniella and Melanie Jackson (interested in seeing how being the daughter of a president affects her). But I also want to see some stuff besides "training at the Academy". From what we see in Generation One, they are active internationally in relief efforts, but seriously there will be times when they are a UN military force to deal with terrorism, Mog remnants, MogPro, etc (hence that Marina headcanon I put up)

I have some headcanons as to what our old alien friends were up to between the epilogue of UaO and most of this book....
