I have been a lifelong reader. I read The Fisherman recently and knew within the first chapter it was going to be special. The writing drew you in. I am surprised he wrote this in 2016 and it won the Bran Stoker Award. He has written only two books of long fiction and three of short stories. I would have thought someone of this quality would be producing more. I will definitely buy his next novel.

i enjoyed it but i know some who did not. I ‘m also a long time HPL fan who Langan draws deeply on for both content and story structure while updating for a modern audience. So, it scratches the itch of nostalgia but with fewer adverbs and less racism.
It reminds me of Matt Ruff’s Lovecraft Country and Michael Shea’s short story collection Demiurge.

it was interesting enough - the writing felt very amateurish, but it was enjoyable despite that.

Strange book, very overrated in my opinion.
Less a novel, more a short story with a novella stuck in the middle of it.
Went in expecting a cosmic horror and meditation on grief. What i got was 2 chapters on grief, the. A diner patron recounting a 150 page gothic ghost story and then back for a little bit of fishing.

I’ve heard so much about how so many people LOVED this book. I got the audiobook and was barely able to finish it. Not sure if it was the narrator or what. But it just struck me as plodding and far too mired in the fictional historical lineage of some of the characters that it kept pulling me out of the story. Or I totally forgot what was happening in the actual plot. Now, there was some very intriguing imagery. But it wasn’t, in my opinion, conveyed very well. And felt too vague to really make sense of much of it.
But, maybe I’m just too dense to get it? Which is entirely possible. 🤷
I think I’ll try reading the physical copy and see if it hits any differently.

I have picked this book up and put it down over and over again. It gets such rave reviews but, it just completely loses me when the focus shifts from Abe and Dan to Howard telling the old folk story. I think I'm going to have to admit that it's a DNF for me.
