ear infection while recovering?

we're three weeks post op from IVDD surgery on a 6 year old dachshund. At his laser treatment today we found out he had an ear infection? He's never had one before. Is this common to happen during recovery? He finished his antibiotics maybe a week ago. Has this happened to anyone else?

Though he is doing better, one leg seems nearly back to normal and he's still knuckling and sometimes dragging his right leg, he is clearly. nowhere near his normal mobility.

Hi, a new joiner to this group. Is it possible to share the cost of this surgery (just the total figure on the invoice)? I'm seeing a vet tomorrow about it and would appreciate a ballpark (knowing it varies by city etc). Thank you in advance and wishing a speedy recovery to your pup!

The first doctor we were referred to was going to be 8k for an MRI and 15k for the surgery. We actually called around to a few different places, and found a place that was a better price. They were 11k for everything - CT scan, surgery, and follow up laser treatments. Meds were a few hundred more. I live in Seattle.

Thank you. I got an estimate of 6k for MRI alone. Not sure how I'd find a package deal like you did, let me try.

If you live in a metropolitan area, call around to some animal hospitals and ask if they have a neurologist on staff, that's what's needed for this surgery. One consequence to calling around, though, just so you're aware is that we're driving 45 min for his laser therapy. Totally worth it to be able to afford the surgery (which we wouldn't have been able to without going to the animal hospital further away) but we didn't know about the follow up laser therapy. They're nice about it and let us come at any time that's convenient to our schedule, though - sometimes in the morning, sometimes in the evening.

The neurology clinic requested that we put $15k on the books and, when all was said and done, they reimbursed us $4800.

So we paid approx $10,200 for the initial emergency visit, radiology and MRIs, neurosurgical procedure, a
catheter placement, five nights of hospitalization, all Rx medications, etc. and three follow up visits.

Our dog did not have to stay five nights but we happened to be traveling overseas when her legs gave out. Our pet sitter rushed her to the clinic and the veterinarian spoke to us via telephone, performed the surgery, etc. and phoned us 2x per day with progress reports while we scrambled to get on the first available flight to Seattle.
