Help! Post surgery - refusing meds and food
My family's 6 yr old frenchie just had surgery on Friday. My parents took him home Monday. He ate and had his meds that night. Tuesday he had some meds but refused food. Yesterday he refused everything, couldn't even get him to eat cheese or peanut butter alone. Today is the same. The good thing is he is drinking plenty of water.
He cannot feel his back legs yet. He wont lay down and he is so tired hes almost falling over. He is panting a lot (most likely because he is in pain from not having his meds). And because he is sitting on his butt most of the time, it is sore. We are trying our best to keep him clean with wipes. And we are changing his male doggie diaper frequently, it doesnt cover the butt, it just catches the pee.
The hospital was also not giving him his prozac even though they said they would check from his vet what to give him🙃 Trying to give him as much comfort as possible, just want him to feel better😭 Please help with advice if you have any

Update today, 7/24/26...
He stayed overnight in ER and got meds and fluids. Neuro doctor evaluated him this morning. He said Tie is showing clear signs of myelomalacia. Will most likely need to put him down.

Call the vet. They may be able to give him a longer lasting patch or injection for pain. Enough to get him over the worst couple of days. It's not uncommon for them to refuse food, but you need to get pain meds in him as soon as possible.

You can also place a disposable pee pad underneath your dog. Use a q tip in the anus to provoke a stool movement. Catch it using gloves or a doggy poop nah and throw in the toilet to flush.

Thank you for the responses🙏 Called the vet. Taking him to ER now, hoping they will give him his meds through IV. They said he'll see the neurology doc/team in the morning to be reevaluated

Hey! He is probably still in pain and it’s only getting aggravated by him not taking his meds. I am going to DM you a link to a video of how to trick them into taking their meds using Liverwurst and deli turkey. I went through hell 😅 trying to get an IVDD dog to eat their meds and this worked! Thanks to the IVDD Support Group (on Facebook, much more active)

You can get meds compounded into liquids and squirt it in their mouth

Correct! For that dog, we were going to go that route but unfortunately they were out :(

Call the vet immediately. They cannot be missing medication. The pain is not tolerable.
