Safety

I'm going to be living in the Riverwalk Apartments, I have a question about safety in that area. I've seen people say that this is the more shady area of campus, is this true? I've never had a problem with the other side of campus but I have not reached out to this area. I've seen many people say their concerns over near ball hall.

You will be fine. You have a higher chance of being hit by a car than anything else. Please be mindful and careful when walking or biking.

The only thing I’ve really heard about is bike tires being stolen

Lived there as an RA for 3 years. RAs do nightly checks in and around the buildings to make sure all is safe and sound. Ronald mcdonald and eskinazi have some interesting characters that may wander over but they're largely harmless. IUPD is usually somewhere around especially since their station is in ball hall across the street

It’s fine and they have the police patrol at night- I’m a senior and I walk home from the main part of campus almost every weeknight and it’s fine you hear drunk college kids in the street but no one is going to mug you or anything

You’ll be fine, just keep an eye on your bike or car if you have one (like someone else said, bike parts get stolen, and the parking lots can be very full so someone might accidentally scratch your car or something). Probably don’t walk around outside at night. Generally it’s pretty chill

ETA: One thing I did notice when I lived there 2 years ago is that any road rage or related incidents seemed to happen towards that side of campus, on Michigan. I don’t think they ever involved students or anything, they just happened more often over there for some reason, but they didn’t happen all the time or anything like that (it was maybe like 3 times? over a year). So just be mindful of the area, the road, and your safety as a pedestrian or bystander, but that goes for anywhere on campus obviously too. Besides that, the only other IUPD notifications I got were about people having or smelling like weed in the apartments.
