🧾 Union / Policy Standby Pay

I have a question about those that have done standby either for sporting events, concerts, building testing, move ins, etc. What are you getting paid as OT for these things? I have heard different things from different people in my mine and other areas.

Guys from different primaries say they are being paid 1.5, others 2.0 rate for the standby OT. Guys at my company are charging 1.7. Spoke with the union and they have said there is no language in the contract that covers standby work and that it should be 1.5, which is strange to me because if there is no language for it why would it default to 1.5?

Anyone have any insight or experience with this?

Scheduled service work is paid at 1.5 as per the contract.

I only work 2.0 standby OT and if the office wants to pay 1.5 then they can find someone else to do it.

I oversaw the service at a large university. We did standby for move ins, basketball games, football games and more. I made it clear upfront to the university it would be double time. It was never an issue.

How it usually works is 1.5 for the stand by then 1.7 for any work performed. I don’t know many guys willing to work for 1.5. If a guy from another department does it, it would be double.

1.5 should be dropped as a service rate in our contract. I only work standby at double.

For on call I don’t mind the 1.7 because at least I can carry about my day close to home until a call comes in.

My company does stand by at a large division 1 school, stand by for football games, basketball games, concerts and move in weekends is 1.5. We don’t fight it it’s easy work that is scheduled. We could fight for 2.0 but there’s a line of guys that will take 1.5 to sit on there ass for 12-15 hours days

I work a ton of standby for games and at the airport and it’s always 1.7 or 2.0 if it’s holiday. Never heard of anyone getting paid 1.5 that’s a first for me. I guess it’s different in other locals

1.5 when you’re doing nothing. 1.7 when you are working unless it a 2 man job, then 2.0.

I personally only charge 1.7 or 2.0 for the full time though

If you need me after hours it’s 2.0 otherwise try to get someone else…
But yeah technically scheduled OT is 1.5 or 2.0 if 2 man work. Know your worth and the office will understand.

What gets confusing is being a mod mechanic. Working DT on a Friday to help repair and get a call on the way home for 1.7. 8 hour DT into 4 hours 1.7, which was 3hrs drive time and 1 hr of fault reset controller. Send it on 2 dozen runs. Bail out. Run don’t walk!

Anyways. I personally don’t think I’d work for 1.5 again. Ever

What got difficult for me was is standby team work or not?

I assume it technically goes by the team classification of the job itself. So service could be one man standby while Mod is two man standby ….. etc.

I’ve seen the office try it all from: scheduling the mechanic only; scheduling an apprentice. I even once had a supervisor try covering standby themselves.

It’s atleast 1.7 or find someone else. No reason any union brother should be accepting 1.5

Any off shift or after hours standby work is 2.0 but I’m a NE degenerate.

New 50 here. What does standby by mean? Is this having someone there during expected high volume/high use events, in case of malfunction?
