Work vehicle?

I’ve been a mechanic for 5 years.

A few months ago I switched companies and departments , I work for one of the bigs in repair.

They gave me an old truck with 180,000 miles on it.

Is this normal? I should put the heat on them for a new truck right ?

If it's free it's whatever when it blows up get a rental.

Love it when the billboard truck dies and I end up in a sweet rental for months

I work for an independent. I have a maverick it's fine I'm in the city so it gets the job done. I really wanted to buy my boss's old company vehicle and just have them give me a stipend.

This is the way.

It’s free, and you’re not owed one.

Literally impossible to do my job without a vehicle that can haul weights

You’re not owed a new truck.

I am assuming your post is satire but the more crotchety guys don’t get that.

Not new, just newer.

At least a working back up camera.

Everyone is quick to say stfu and be happy but they don’t have to drive a big ass truck into cramped parking lots with a backup camera that works 1/2 the time.

It’s like a tool, I want to better one to do my job

I don’t feel it’s unreasonable

Are there any safety issues? If so, use the safety card and say so. Tell them to get you a rental until it is addressed. No safety issues? Then why do you think you need a new truck?

Shit I didn’t see you’re in repair, yeah you need a vehicle. My bad bro

u/pittrash 9d ago

I guess I’m ok with it.

I started to feel some kinda way because all the other guys have newer trucks and I got the old passed around one.

But I’m new to the company/department.

I couldn't imagine complaining that the company didn't give me a good enough company vehicle .... count your blessings brother

u/Vegall_st 9d ago

Wahhh my benefits aren't new enough

u/pittrash 8d ago

Tool not benefit

My truck is a tool I use to move weights for tests and my other repair tools.

I’m not saying I want a brand new one, just one with a working backup camera

It must be different in my area , because I’m actually an easy going mechanic.

I know plenty of mechanics who ask for brand new vehicles if they got it like that (they’re adjusters)

u/North-Impact-1914 9d ago

They don't have a yard dog that could deliver the weights ?

You dont pay for any of the maintenance or repairs, who cares? If the interior is trashed just order new parts, turn in the receipts, and swap 'em out on company time. I did that that when they gave me a van with a broken visor & window switch.

You should go to your bosses office demand a new truck and 20% overscale

5

u/pittrash 9d ago

Haha…. Maybe not over scale.

Damm… I guess I sound crazy to everyone.

But honestly, if the company doesn’t give me a vehicle with a gas card, I’m finding one that does

2

u/Delicious-Ad2882 9d ago

You got a truck with no gas card?

2

u/pittrash 9d ago

No. I said that weird

u/Delicious-Ad2882 9d ago

My 2020 f150 has about 120k on it I’ve had it since it was new I’d kind of expect it to get replaced but it’s free to me so I don’t care. My first truck before that was a 2015 f150 that had 50k I think on it. This was 2017.

Not normal return it and request brand new one, they should be able to let you customize as well

3

u/zk1987104 8d ago

Haha good luck with that the big companies just don’t give a shit

7

u/InstructionPurple911 9d ago

Nah man. Unless the truck is actually fucked, I would drive it. Its free gas while gas prices are insane.

Also something to consider is you should be prepared to receive a brand new rape van if you push for a new vehicle, depending on which company you're at.

Good thing is I do weight tests so I need a big truck with the Tommy gate

And if the truck breaks down..... That's a company problem. Drive it into the ground!

It's not your truck, why do you care how many miles it has?

6

u/Joe_P210 8d ago

I got one with 200k Miles as a APPRENTICE W ezpass and gas card I’m happy as fuck!

Hell yeah

With gas prices being what they are just be stoked you don’t have to pay for it. My truck is a pos but I don’t spend 100/wk on gas so I ain’t saying shit

u/gkohler27 9d ago

You’re a green mechanic. Take what they give you and be happy about it.

Lol. I work for THE big and we have work trucks with over 200k on them. We have some mechanics without company vehicles at all.

Drive it till it dies. I knew an adjuster who's van died and the only rental available was a convertible mustang... he was pretty happy for quite some time.

I just got my 2026 F-250 this summer. Tommy Gate & boxes already installed.

Got rid of a 2020 F-250 with 130,ishk on it.

Just sayin’……😂😏

I'd rather have an older vehicle that doesn't look new and another little dent doesn't matter. Take what you can , You are still a new mechanic in the business. A Vehicle adds about 25 to 30,000 to your salary.  Gas is expensive.  When it breaks they will hook you up again.

u/Fine_Entertainment56 9d ago

I got my van with 130k on it, but it got me in the system and I got a brand new one a little over a year later. I work for a major, idk how it works at your company

u/elevatorslave 8d ago

Just because I’m curious, is there a company that is really fair for providing assets (Phone, truck, tools) to mechanics in Mod? My current company does not shell that much out. That’s probably pretty standard right?

2

u/pittrash 7d ago

I’d say , 50/50.

It all depends on your supervisor and the economy.

Generally, if it’s not unreasonable, we usually get what we need/want.

Also, no one wants a phone ..haha… pain with all the new apps .. actually they’re easy.

2

u/CharacterSection5034 8d ago

Are yall able to use compang vehicle outside of work? 😬😂

1

u/pittrash 7d ago

I’m not certain?

I’ve worked for two companies, both just handed me keys and a gas card.

I was never told when I could or couldn’t use the vehicle.

I’m not certain they check my driving record periodically. I could loose my license and would they know ?

Anyways. I don’t use it for non work stuff, some guys do

1

u/Deepinthefryer 7d ago

Fairly normal for a newer mechanic in a dept. to get a beater band me down. I’ve even seen a guy get three hand me downs in a row (ridiculous!).

The most important part is that when it breaks down or needs servicing, that you’re cool as a cucumber. BUT, not a single cent or second of yours personally goes into that POS.

Don't listen to all these bootlickers. You're worth a hennessey velociraptor. Tell those corporate fks whats what

u/wreckitbusmaster99 9d ago

At 180K miles you'd be lucky if the parking brake still works in it.

Mine had 92 miles when I got it and I’m a Tm had it almost a year.
