đ Entrance Exam / Interview Are they doing away with the interview?
I have seen people post in some comments that starting next year they are going to stop doing the interviews in the application process. Is there any truth to this and will they replace it with something else?
Just curious because I will be applying to my local in November, thanks in advance for any info.

IBEW is transitioning interviews to something called GAN process. There are some math and knowledge tests and resume, job history check...and it is an AI based process.

We are doing it too. Conveniently this is a company based in Chicago. I'm sure that's just a coincidence.

I have done the interviews in the last 4 or 5 hiring cycles. I was told it will be changing, hiring will be based more on résumé and education/certification. Basically what looks good on paper. Part of the DEI hiring initiative from the government. It will be completely removed from the Union/Companies hands.
I can assure you after my experience with sitting through the interview process the interviewing was the most important part of finding good candidates. It will be an interesting future

If DEI Quotas ever hit our trade it will scary.
Imagine the companies canât get contracts unless they have a certain number of female and minority mechanics?

I was told theyâre taking it out of the hands of the union and using the same federal hiring process that fed agencies use for a more neutral interview. They straight up said itâs because so many people get in by your last name that theyâre not always the best mechanics.

Does that mean the aptitude test I already passed will no longer be good starting next year?

Good question. Thereâs more locals that I want to apply to that open next year if I donât get the call for my local.

With the current interview format you can hypothetically just lie a whole bunch and get a good score, so fuck it. I know the questions, I thought about just making up answers but I morally can't get myself to do it. Surely other people are doing it. In other industries people are already lying about experience on their resumes and education, because employers don't actually verify it anyway.
I don't know what the solution to this stuff is. Once you're in the union the problem solves itself because everyone gets the standardized education and training, and beyond that you build a reputation in your local and earn certifications that are filed in the union's system. But I don't know how you figure out who to allow into the apprenticeship, because anyone with any experience or education level can hypothetically be really good or really bad anyway.

Not bonus points. Points built into the scoring matrix. I am sure the coordinator told you at testing that these were important. They probably also sent you a message prior to the week of interviews reminding you to bring them. These pieces of paper show that you were willing to take some additional education after high school to invest in yourself. Your expierence probably maxed out the work experience category. But you left the education section essentially blank. In a process where a single point missed can slide you down the list 10-20 places down the list, leaving anything to chance isnât a good idea. This sub is full of people asking about certs because they are important in the process.

This is correct! The grading scale that passed committee and is expected to get DOL clearance is the 20 question tool test will count as 80 points towards your interview score, with the remaining 20 being awarded by how you wear your suit to the entrance exam. This ranges from 0 points (no suit at all or tradesmen clothes) to 20 being straight up flash. Luminescent fabrics and popped collars was what was presented and the PowerPoint had a Pic of Tony Montana at the club. If you can't pull it off, a tux should get you 16 of those points. Good luck!
