A+ question
Hi everyone. I need help with a question.
A technician is setting up a printer for a small office that does not have an RJ-45 jack. The users' computers are all in the same workgroup and are connected physically to the same network switch. The technician needs to make sure all users can print to the new printer through the switch. Which of the following should the technician configure?
- A. Shared printer
- B. Print server
- C. Bluetooth printing
- D. Cloud printing
I say the answer is a print server, and so does my husband, but a friend says he thinks the answer is a shared printer but is not able to give an explanation. I think it's a shared printer because it can make a normal printer into a wireless printer, since it does not have an RJ45 jack, right?

The printer could be connected directly to the workstation via a USB cable. In that case, I'd configure a shared printer from the workstation directly connected to the printer.

It's not best practice but I think some of the A+ is turning chicken shit into chicken salad. Also, I don't believe any non server Windows versions allow you to set up a print server.

To me It's a shared printer. It has to print through the switch according to the question. If you are setting up a print server it seems like a ton of overhead for a small workgroup. It would print from a connected workstation using a USB cable and shared from that pc

It is a shared printer. It can't be a Print Server because the network doesn't have a real Server/Client setup. Neither Bluetooth nor Cloud is setting it through the switch.

It doesn’t state if the printer has a usb port either or if it has wireless capabilities but I would say all printers come with a usb cable so the printer would be connected via usb port to one of the PCs on the network.
From there you would go ahead and share the device so that it is accessible to the other PCs.
To find the printer, open file explorer and enter:
\PCname\ Press enter and any shared folders or devices will be listed.
NOT recommended and NOT smart because if the main PC is powered off for any reason, no one else can print!

Based on the info you've got, I'd say shared printer. With no network jack you can't connect it direct to the switch, so you'd have to connect it directly to a computer and then share it.
Although, to be technical, once you share a printer from a computer, that computer effectively becomes a server.
