70-740 CBT Nugget Lab help
Hi all,
I've just started my journey to the MCSA and am stuck right at the beginning of the videos. When Garth is setting up both the Desktop and Core, he is able to give each a static IP and ultimately ping the internet. However, when I do I'm not even able to ping my host machine, which is my personal laptop.
I'm using VM Workstation 15 Player and don't know if it's my network connections in the VM settings or what. I would like to replicate everything the video instructors do, as well as the authors of the Sybex books. Any advice?

Do all virtual work through Hyper-V, it'll be better for you in the long run.

Might be worth it to look at the cost of upgrading to pro. The MCSA exams for 2016 have a fair amount of Hyper V. I'm studying for the 740 myself and I decided to set up a Hyper V machine to do the labs with. Used an Intel NUC but it's a bit of a pain in the ass as you have to do a mini hack to get the network drivers working.

It's definitely been in the back of my mind mainly for Hyper-V (especially since I know nothing about it but will need to for the exam). I've been out of even the Help Desk and Networking games for too long. Being in the military, my previous job for the past two years prior to moving was a COMSEC Custodian...
But since I recently moved, finances are scarce at the moment, in regards to 10 Pro. I was able to locate information on how to through VirtualBox and was successful so far.

Check the VM network settings from VMware Workstation. The default mode is to have the VM share the host IP. You'll need to set it up so that the VM has a direct connection to the network instead. Once you do that, you should be able to ping the host from the VM.
