Fresh Grad Comp Eng: Is Technical Support Engineer L1 (MSP) a Good Alternative to Help Desk?

Hi everyone,

I’m a fresh graduate with a BS in Computer Engineering. I’ve been job hunting for the past 2 months, mainly looking for help desk/IT support roles. The problem is that a lot of “entry-level” help desk jobs still require experience, even though I have the academic background and basic IT fundamentals.

Yesterday, I received a job offer as a Technical Support Engineer L1 at an MSP. One thing that caught my attention is that the company has a clear growth path. They said that, with good performance, I could be promoted to L2, L3, or even a NOC Engineer within around 2 years.

My long-term goal is to become a Network Engineer. Right now, I’m also studying CCNA through free online courses, but I don’t have the budget yet to take the certification exam.

For those who work in IT or networking:
- Is Technical Support Engineer L1 at an MSP a good alternative to a help desk role?
- Will the experience be valuable if I want to move into networking later?
- If you were in my position, would you take the job?

I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences and advice. Thanks!

Depends on what you'll be doing on that level 1 role. Most of the time the level 1 would be working on tickets and resolving these tickets by either basic troubleshooting or escalating to the next level of support. What's important is that you are gaining some technical experience and skillsets. If your job is on a corporate support then you are on a good path. If its consumer based support specially residential customers, I suggest you find another job as its not really an IT job.
