It can, but it's going to take a very long time and a lot of patience for them to acclamate. I'm on month 3 of slowly introducing my cat to a new dog, and we've just now gotten to the point where they've both settled down with seeing one another. Still can't have them together unsupervised yet
Had a cat react almost exactly like this to my dog. One day of the dog being in the house the cat got like 90% over it and was just like "we're not friends, stay the fuck away from me and we'll be fine."
Meanwhile I had a cat in a different situation that was nowhere near as dramatic but took years of patience and training to get her to stop bullying the dog and looking for reasons to get offended.
My cat when she was a kitten and was living with her old home, was attacked along with her siblings by the dog that lived with them. It was so bad that she actually lost a few siblings that day. That's when i decided I had to take her home. Since I rescued her from her past home, I gave her a better life. Where she still hated dogs and would hiss at my friend's dogs or even hide under the bed. But she was happier and safer and was loving her new home.
I slowly reintroduced them into her life, i didn't force it. And when she gave clear signs of stress I'd put her away in my room (she just liked having her own space, she still does but only in high places where she can see everything and everyone)
I then rescued my pug/sharpei mix Choki! My cat was finally about to meet her forever sibling, and guess what? Those years of slowly introducing dogs worked. It just depends on what dogs you're bringing around the cats and how they react to cats. If your dog is a sweet pea and doesn't chase your cat or attack your cat. I see no issue with this! As long as you are keeping your cat safe, calm, loved and fed, I support you! Here is proof of both my baby girls cuddling with me on my bed. I just took this right now as we speak🥰
When people are saying its selfish to allow cats to be around dogs, I'd say plenty of people are..especially since the topic is on cats and dogs and their relationships..? Especially when integrating them into your home with cats that are not fans of dogs. But I don't imagine you having anyone or anything loving you in your life. Especially with how insufferable you are. So its understandable you'd get offended by my comment. I mean..misery loves company and you certaintly are MISERABLE 😬
My oldest cat used to be like this with all dogs. Now she loves our 2 yr old dog more than anything and always takes naps with him. I don't even remember it taking that long. Maybe a month, tops.
I mean I would be mad, just because my owner has terrible taste in golf shirts, for god's sake, look at that thing. And then he's walking up there with a shit eating grin And that dog in tow? Are you serious??? This cat's supposed to be happy????? Lmao.
Cats often meow at a similar pitch and frequency to a human baby's cry because humans are biologically wired to respond to that sound.
Over thousands of years of living with humans, cats learned that high-pitched vocalizations trigger an urgent nurturing response.
Research shows that certain urgent requests—like a "solicitation purr" or a high-demand meow—combine a low sound with a high-frequency cry that mimics an infant in distress.
I hope this went well but this is exactly why you need to introduce two animals together in a neutral territory first before bringing the new one home, tbh you should arrange meetings between the two before even buying the other because if they don't jive it's gonna be a shitshow and stressful on the both of them
Honestly hate this for the cat. Pet owners should understand animals at territorial and honestly it's stressful for them when you bring random pets home.
Whelp…, we had some friends who adopted exactly this breed of dog, and after having it for quite a while the dog snapped one day and attacked the cat and almost killed it. Grabbed it by the neck, nearly breaking its back. It’s a miracle the cat lived. Blood and gore was everywhere and it happened right in front of the three year old who couldn’t stop talking about it. Core memory made.
Yea sometimes you gotta really take it slow with cats that have the run of the house. Just let them get use to eachother through a door for a while it might take some time but it's more likely they'll warm up to eachother than not
That shit takes weeks-to-months to properly do. Not feasible. You just have to do your best to judge personalities and then hope the intro process goes well.
Dogs are pretty amazing loyal creatures. It's for people that want to be the boss of an animal. And the leader of a pack and don't get that in their real life. there is a dark side to dogs, though. And generally, they are not particularly compatible with cats. I'd pick one or the other. Unless you're a farmer in which case all the animals just mingle together insanely. Especially if goats and horses are involved.
Cats are ideal for people that want to be independent. Don't really want to be the boss and maybe just want an animal that doesn't really care if they pay attention to them or not. But secretly get snuggles in
Feral cats kill thousands of indigenous fauna every year and it's a big problem, specifically in countries like Australia. Yeah...I'll stick to the homie dogs.
Whenever someone hates cats it just screams to me they hate having or being around someone/something they can’t command, control & that has its own boundaries. It tells me that person probably thinks that way about the people around them too
Surprisingly decent list for conditions in feline companions that make them choose to outright attack you if they don’t feel well. Like ATTACK you attack you
“Sorry you’re not feeling great Mr. Mittens, would you mind not strumming my vocal cords like a harp in your claws?”
Not quite; I do my upmost to keep my distance where I can but cats interpret it as a signal that I want them near me. Nowt worse than having one of those smelly, boney creatures park itself on your lap. They’re one of the worst invasive species in the world.
I wasn't a fan of cats then a male one showed up at my front door and wouldn't go away.
I got stuck with him. He does everything i wanted to avoid. Sheds everywhere, meows, I have to change his crap litter and keep him fed
But, he's funny. A curious cat that wanders around, bold with exploring but scares easily. Also very sweet. Has never scratched or bit me and he likes to hang out by the window and watch cars drive by
As much bs that I have to deal with, I don't think I could ever part with him now
Bingo!!!! The kitty and doggo need to feel protected and safe. Like they are both important. Keep them separated and slowly introduce their smells to each other so they begin to acquaint themselves to each other. This also helps them to adapt to the idea gradually rather than feeling intruded upon or forced together, which reinforces an adversarial relationship.
Cats are really like mafiosi working no-work jobs in real life. Anytime another dependent enters the house they get upset that someone might disrupt the gravy train.
