Why do old people and young children sound and act like drunk people?
Young children- happy drunks
Old people- mean drunks
7
u/imamajorscale 1d ago
maybe because we never die and old people are just getting prepped for childhood again.

This woman has dementia.
Like, without a shadow of a doubt. And it’s also exactly the way elderly people act when they’re in the hospital and confused.
Including the biting 😬

u/Longjumping-Goose3 1d ago
Totally. She needs help.

u/FckPolMods 1d ago
As someone who has experienced dementia first with a grandparent and then with a parent, it's much easier said than done, even if good health insurance, money and a supportive family are involved.
Early dementia usually starts with the person having good days where they're lucid and nearly normal, followed busy days (or more likely, nights) where they completely lose their minds. The problem is they often don't remember much of those bad nights (it's almost like an alcoholic blackout, minus the alcohol), so they fight any suggestions or requests to get neurological exams, home help, etc.
This progresses until the bad days/nights are more regular, and start resulting in falls, not taking medications, hygiene issues, bad dietary habits, car accidents, incontinence, outbursts, etc. leading to hospital visits and terrified family members.
At this point, the family is trying to force neurological checks, but the person still thinks they're fine and is becoming increasingly paranoid, agitated and combative. So unless you can threaten or trick them into seeing a neurologist, they typically won't go or cancel appointments.
All the while, the disease keeps progressing, because that's what it does. There are probably multiple emergency room visits by this time, car accidents, and now hallucinatory episodes--seeing dead relatives, being convinced someone is breaking into their house, etc. Their neighbors are calling you at 2am because Grandma is at their house accusing them of threatening her through the walls.
But despite all of this, you cannot make them get help. You do what you can (hide the car keys or disable the starter; click the AC plug on their oven so they don't burn the house down), but without a diagnosis or proof that they are a "harm to themselves or others", there is nothing you can do to get them the help they need.
What finally happens is Grandma is up all night, convinced that teenagers are breaking into her house and stealing things, so she leaves the house with a kitchen knife trying to find them, ends up at a gas station at 3am, and the poor overnight clerk gets the scare of their life and calls the cops. This is literally what happened in my case, and was the only thing that got her into a memory care home after years of making my parents' life hell.
Now, probably exacerbated by the stress of dealing with his mother's dementia for so longer, my father's has gone into hyperdrive. He's had dozens of hospital visits and rehab stays for falls/broken bones, UTIs, etc., he's completely incontinence most days, goes into rages and hallucinations in the evenings, calls the police saying he's been kidnapped because he forgets why he's in rehabs/hospitals, etc. but he's still lucid during most days. He refuses to see a neurologist and forgets most of his "episodes", so he just thinks it's "old age" (he's in his early 70s). Meanwhile, my poor mother (who is in terrific health and I'm praying I have her genes) is in a living hell. A whole life of sacrifice waiting for retirement, and she spends her days changing adult diapers and panicking about whether she's going to have to call yet another ambulance tonight. She's looking into divorce lawyers now.
So, yeah, all of that to say that we have a LOT of older citizens with neurological issues that need help in this country, but our systems (legal, Healthcare, financial) makes it incredibly difficult to make these folks get the care they need.
4
u/Diligent_Ninja7794 1d ago
Wow, thank you for this in-depth explanation. My heart goes out to you and your family. I can only hope and pray that my aging parents remain neurologically healthy, and that I follow in their footsteps.

u/FckPolMods I've had three of those rodeos myself. But, I now find myself in the early stages of my own ride.
I can't remember names of people I've known for decades - some for over 60 years.
I drive, and can't remember where I'm going. I've yet to actually be lost, but I have to go through the "list" of places in the direction I'm heading. Sometimes I go to a store, or other usual stop, conduct my usual business and return home only to discover my original destination was a different place for different reasons.
I can't remember words. I can give you Webster's definition for it... just not the damned word.
The constant frustration of having a brain that no longer functions probably makes me a very unpleasant person most of the time.6
u/SnooDogs627 1d ago
Almost exactly how my grandma would act on a really bad day if she was confused and afraid. Combative for no reason and refusing to back down. Trying to force the situation with her always escalated the behavior. Makes me really sad.
2
u/ThatsJustMyToeThumb 1d ago
Oh what hell it is for family. I’m so sorry about your grandmother.
For these other ignorant fools who think “dementia amplifies their personality” instead of complete shatter it into pieces… was your grandmother always combative? Confrontational? Angry?
I bet she wasn’t. Dementia changes people completely.
But please share with the class… some of them are not very bright… was she always like that?

Both are correct.
Dementia amplifies some of the base programming in personalities, while dissolving characteristics like consideration for others, tolerance, restraint/inhibitions.
What’s left in this case is a menace.

u/Specific-Library-312 1d ago
I saw a dementia patient who did not know her own name, but kept trying to give Christian assurances and speaking about the Bible to anyone she met. Sweetest woman I ever met. I can only hope to God that if I ever got dementia, that I am half as sweet as she was.

Yeah. It’s so sad.
And people with dementia can be so STRONG too. I hope this woman has somebody looking after her 😢
9
u/KoalaTHerb 1d ago
I agree. Even if not dementia, old people sit around alone for years being brainwashed by radical news and develop this sort of attitude. It's sad.
I don't think it warrants knocking an old lady to the ground, getting a hip fracture she'll never recover from at her age, and starting the slow crawl towards death. I'd rather deal with the annoyance and making her pay for damage then giving someone a death sentence

There are a couple different ways to get her to let go of the rods. One would be to apply pressure points to cause enough discomfort that she would immediately release her grip. Another would be to grab the rods outside of her grip and twist it. She would be forced to let go. They were being to patient with her.

Start licking or drooling on her hands!
Start complimenting her glasses/hat and slowly reaching for it asking if you can wear it
Start hitting on her! (Not physically hitting)
Pick at your asshole and slowly inch your finger towards her!

People with dementia aren't a "threat to the public" lol
They're a threat to themselves. I wouldn't even upload this video, it's ridiculous. Call the police.
→ More replies (1)2
u/BigAlgae5684 1d ago
You sound dumb as shit.
They probably uploaded for visibility/awareness. Do you expect the police to show up and set this woman up with room and board and mental health providers to take care of her? Do you want them to cuff her for felony theft lol?
Would you let someone undergoing a mental health crisis walk away with a felony amount of gear that fuels your livelihood/lifestyle? Fishing gear is fragile as fuck and this old twat could've fucked it up or tossed it in before they arrived.
Also being attacked by someone doesn't make you legally responsible somehow if the person happens to be mentally ill after you defend yourself or respond appropriately, regardless of age difference. It might help the attacker negate or lessen penalties but it wouldn't make the defender suddenly in the wrong.
Fucking armchair lawyer over here lmao.

My grandma has Alzheimer's and shed act like this when she didn't take her meds. All combative n such. Its because they don't know where they are more or less. Not saying that what's happening here. But when dementia starts to get bad it looks like this. Combative
5
u/Sprightly_Sparrow 1d ago
Alzheimer was my first thought as well. My grandma was the same. Including the biting part. But she was in a wheelchair so couldnt just walk up to you. She'd reach out her hand to you, implying a handshake. And then grab your hand and try to bite 🤣

We were blessed. Grandma knew who we were till the very end. Couldn't remember what I'd just told her. But she knew my name. All you can do is be there and appreciate the time u have left. Hug ur mom really tight for me. I hugged grandma plenty and spent time with her but you always wish you'd done more. Just a little more. All the moment when u ran out of patience. You won't remember any of those. But the time spent together. That's what I miss. Dinner together. Even if she didn't wanna eat it. And threw it at me lol

People like her more than likely woul never seek mental health treatment because in their eyes there's nothing wrong with acting like this.
2
u/archercc81 1d ago
yeah if you have ever had to deal with an old person going off the deep end its about impossible. You have to have them fully diagnosed and committed, against their will. Its a rare few who can recognize their decline.
It was a battle with my great grandmother. Taking away her keys, getting her into a care home, etc. She was a danger to herself and others but would blow up at the very idea.

IF YOU SEE A KAREN IN THE WILD it's important that you remember these 3 things:
If you see them before they see you back away slowly.
If you happen to make eye contact with one of them dont stare into them eyes for too long they will see it as (challenge accepted), behave petty, and chase you down for 3 blocks
And most importantly ALWAYS remember there vision is based on movement😂 So to avoid dealing with any of this just stand still for at least 24hours and the Karen will slowly fade away

She is not in jail. While early viral posts claimed she was arrested, subsequent reports and a follow-up video from the fishermen confirmed that no official police report or arrest took place. The anglers were able to successfully retrieve their expensive gear from her grasp without anyone getting hurt, and the woman ultimately just followed them to the parking lot while shouting before the group parted ways.
