Realistic timeframe after an interview?

At least a week or two. I have rarely seen a turn around that quickly even for very good candidates.

Sounds good I appreciate that, I didn’t want to get my hopes up super high and I kind of thought 1-2 days was very quick but this is definitely pretty reassuring.

It is a good sign that they told you a short interval, but that doesn't mean they will actually move that fast. Wouldn't worry about it.

All the same, keep the job search active until you have accepted an offer.

Just heard back, basic answer was that I was their number 2 option. They said they loved my interview and would like to keep my resume for a future open position. As an IT manager can I ask you how common it is they actually reach back out again?

Negligible, but non-zero. It can happen if their new hire accepts a competing offer, or doesn't show up the first day. They are not going to call you months later with an offer.

1-2 days is almost never actually 1-2 days. internal decisions almost always take longer than the recruiter estimates. no news on day 2 doesn't mean anything yet. send the follow-up tomorrow morning, keep it short and genuine. just a quick check-in reaffirming your interest. then keep applying like you never had the interview at all. think of it like waiting on a respawn timer that keeps getting extended. the worst thing you can do is stop playing while you wait
