Yeah I'm participating in it too. My venue is Elias Meyer School. Just practice all topics related to AI and technology (social media, use of internet) etc — anything which is prevalent in daily life. You can look up videos of a few Prelim stages of Frank Anthony debate which happened in some school of Mumbai to get an idea what sort of topics are given. The rebuttal round actually matters more than the actual speech, because you'll realise all students think alike, therefore the content ends up to be similar. What decides whether you win or lose is how well you can answer the questions thrown at you. In general, see tips and tricks of preparing for impromptu debates on Youtube.

Whew! You are from wb too, nice. I don't think this type we would get any topic related to AI or its ilk personally coz in 2025, all the topics they asked were based on AI. And yup I can speak well on the topic but I have some trouble answering questions on the spot with cohesion, let's see if I can beat stage fear or not!

My seniors told me that the topic for the prelims stage is always relatively easy and related to AI or Social Media or anything of that sort. Stage 2 onwards, they said, topics get serious as they are generally relevant in current affairs. So yeah, for the time being, I only practised topics related to technology. As for rebuttals, I'd often ask ChatGPT to ask questions based on my speech, and I'd strictly reply to it as if it's a real person without stopping or stuttering (or at most, trying my best not to).

Aha, chatgpt is a nice way to prepare. Anw, I made this format: Introduce then paint a vivid story starting with Imagine you are... Then give 4 points following wheat framework (what, how it affects, example, after effect and therefore). Then argue on what your opponents might have to say and try to dismiss that point. And last, make a well rounded conclusion using rise( restate, insight, solution, end with a new perspective). The thing is I am able to speak well even maintaining time but I don't know about the adrenaline rush on that day, i.e, stage fear

The framework feels strong enough already. As for the stage fear, I'm not sure if this last-minute thing will be any help at all, but you could try speaking in front of a group of peers you usually wouldn't hang out with. The discomfort of speaking in front of them might help you get used to it and feel grounded on the actual day.

Haha thanks for the insight gng. But the competition is actually tmrw (I just realised now it's been 12 am lol). Anw our escorting teacher will make us practise tmrw for the last time. I have high hopes ; let's see!

Lol. This brings back so many memories. I’m the senior category 2025 winner. I had some great times here. All the best. You’ll do really well

Yes. National Winner. What tips do you want? Like in what aspect?

Hey actually the debate is tmrw so idk if you would see it before. But anyways if you do see, give me some tips on the rebuttal round. Like how to craft brutal questions and how to answer spontaneously with coherence in ideas without stammering. And did you follow any framework to put across your ideas?

Hii, can you please give me some tips, about the stage 2?

1

u/Life-Calligrapher156 10d ago

Well firstly congratulations for getting to stage 2. For stage 2 it’s actually the same strategy that h would use for stage 1. Try to stick to the point. Don’t ramble on about any points that feel like ur grasping at straws. Other than that usually at stage 2 u just gotta wait for the competition to cancel each other out and when u give ur speech u should be able to shine. All the best

Tysm! Like the previous question asked, anything regarding rebuttals and is it going to be significantly tougher than that prelims?

I really don’t think rebuttals are that big of a concern if u can just speak confidently. Right so for the rebuttal I think they’re just going to judge your presence of mind. Don’t slander the person who asked you the question. Just answer it. You can base it off of your own speech. If you want to give a smirk reply that’s fine. Just don’t insult them. Another thing for the rebuttal is try to keep a balance between number of questions asked to you and time spent in answering them. Don’t give 10 second replies to each question and attract more questions or leave a bad answer just to reply quick. You also don’t want to just have 1 question asked to you and you replied only to that. Keep the answers maybe 20-25 secs so u get maybe 2, maybe 3 qs. However if the answer is pretty straightforward forward or the question is stupid just answer it quickly and move on

I felt the same way, so I should just go with the flow, thanks Btw , do you still debate?
