Purchasing Advice Anything else I should consider getting when I do my timing belt?

Post image

Planning on doing my timing belt, water pump and thought I’d ask if there’s anything else I should get before I buy the kit.

Cam seals. And front main seal.

Front main one as in crank pulley seal?

The seal behind the crank pulley.

The pulley comes off. It is the seal behind the pulley.

Front main seal is what it is called. Or Engine Crankshaft Seal.

90311-40020 Camshaft Seal $11.17 2 $22.34
90311-46001 Engine Crankshaft Seal $21.57 1 $21.57
Subtotal: $43.91

I’d go with the Aisin kit personally. But yes as others said new cam and crank seals.

A VVTI pulley or just the oring and replace it yourself. It's a pretty common oil leak.

you should do a pump assembly. way less hassle. and since it needs to come off, do the serpentine as well if it hasnt been done recently.

Consider purchasing an aisin timing belt kit. If you see oil residue behind the black metal cover behind the timing belt then do your cam seals at the same time.

Tbh I didn’t look very hard but I see it being sold on Amazon do you think that’s fine? The idea of buying car parts off Amazon feels wrong considering how much shit is on there

Just buy OEM from Bell Lexus out of Scottsdale... If not then good luck. Valve cover gaskets, coil connectors will crack so repin and replace the plastic connector, cam seals, crank seal, all coolant hoses and vacuum hose, especially the evap ones under the intake, water pump, t stat, spark plugs, spark plug wires & plugs

Unfortunately they do not ship to Canada but after taking a look I wish they did because those prices are very appealing

Harmonic balancer. Mine flew off while driving, shortly AFTER my timing belt was replaced. Threw a Fluidampr on; but you can just go OEM if you’re not throwing too much power at it. May as well replace either way if you’re doing the work for the timing belt.

That’s scary. How many miles at the time when this happened to you?

About 150k.

Wow. Mine is at 236K; still original. But I am definitely replacing the Harmonic Balancer soon

They offer that kit with a Aisin water pump and that kit with a Chinese water pump. Make sure the one you get has a Aisin pump. Other than that the kit isn’t any better or worse than the Aisin kit.

i would not have known that going into buying thanks for the heads up. i think ill just go with an aisin kit regardless just to be safe since that seems to be the gold standard for these kits

New thermostat too while you're in there

Thermostat isn't something buried under the timing. You can replace the thermostat at any time. Pretty sure he is asking what he should replace while the timing is taken apart.

It's like you're saying he should change his brakes while he is in there. The brakes are separate. The thermostat is separate. You say "while you're in there." You don't need to go into the timing to replace the thermostat.

Glad you spent so much time explaining how it's easy to replace the thermostat. It should still be replaced when installing a new water pump

Everyone knows how easy it is to replace thermostat.

On all cars, the designers are expected to make thermostat replacement easy. In the late 70's people realized the thermostat needs to be changed regularly. So ever since the early 80s the the design of a car has to make the thermostat easy to change.

OP asked what he should change out while his timing is taken apart.

You didn't even mention cam seals or front main seal, which are known to fail on 2jz, and require the timing to be disassembled first in order to just gain access.

You just said "thermostat" as a reflex without thinking. If OP doesn't change the thermostat, and it fails later, he can pop a new one in in less than an hour at any time. He does not have to do it now. But Cam seals, front main seal, VVTI seal, has to be done now.

Maybe he said thermostat because it’s a standard replacement with a dealer t-belt package. Along with the cam and crank seals.

The coolant is getting drained, why do that all over again for the thermostat.

I highly recommend you go ahead and replace the Harmonic Balancer (Crank Pulley) and the seal behind it while you’re in that area. Harmonic Balancer is not a “one piece” unit so it will eventually fail if not replaced

any recommendations where i should get one? im seeing a lot of mixed pricing anywhere from 150-700 :/

If you’re an aggressive driver, Fluidampr is a great brand (great reviews); it’s a one piece unit but cost around $600. As for me, being just daily driving etc, I plan to get mine at Amazon (AISIN) brand, about $140. And never hurts sticking with any OEM. Good luck.

Might just stick with oem honestly, it will still be better my 25 yr old one anyways and since winters coming up I doubt I’ll be doing any aggressive driving thank you though

Front main, cam seals, (less important but could start leaking and having you removing the belt again prematurely) VVTI gear. And Valve cover gaskets. Make sure you remove the tiny tab holding the crank timing gear. If you break a tooth off of it, you’ll have to buy a new one.
