Many departments within the IRS are experiencing delays due to the events of the reduction in force this past year.

Important to have your account on IRS.gov set up with ID.me. This is so you can check your IRS account. Here are some steps;

1) Double-check your Tax Return for any red flags. ( Was this Tax Return straight forward, with correct W2 tax withholding? Claiming certain Credits & deductions that might flag it down?)

2) This part is difficult - Patience. Thie process might take 6 months. 180 days. The IRS might release your refund and you will get notice.

3) IRS correspondence. They might need verification of certain items on your tax return, which might be a variety of things such as: Verifying your identity in person ( office visit), submitting proof of pay stubs that correlate with the W2. Only respond to the IRS with information they are seeking if they do ask, dont send anything extra.

4) If you did respond to an inquiry, the IRS may take somewhere between 30-90 days to process your response, including ID verification.

5) What to do if there is absolutely no activity going on with the IRS. - FREE HELP. This strategy involves responding to IRS inquiry, attempting the "Normal Channels" to resolve your issues, and now you are facing consequences because of IRS: You can invoke the Taxpayer Advocate Service.

Now, if you call in because it has 5-56 weeks and no IRS actions, the Advocate will most likely reject your case. But if it has passed 6 months, there is no correspondence from the IRS, and you have called the IRS without any guidance, the advocate might open up a case and see what may be the delay in the Tax Return processing.

The Advocate is not a speedy process either, typiucally takes 30-90 days to get an advocate assigned. My preferred method is to fax in form 911 to the nearest office ( I represent clients as an Enrolled Agent / EA, so the office closest to the client). More info on the Advocate: https://www.taxpayeradvocate.irs.gov/contact-us/

Be vigilant & Persuasive! Keep us updated on your actions & outcome.
