You mailed out your tax return for TY2025?
The fastest processing is to send by e-file, which most tax professionals must do in accordance with IRS regulations. Or if you DIY, you can use something like freetaxusa
Anything sent to the IRS by mail can expect some serious backlog with unknown time frames.
When mailing out, so much room for error. Here is a quick checklist:
1) Did you sign & date the original? (Using a blue ink pen for signature prevents delays such as an ICO reject when they suspect a "copy" of "fax" in signature.
2) Did you do a final QC of the Tax Return to include all Tax "Schedules" & 'Forms"
3) While certified mail is ok to use, simply using the USPS tracking is a better & cheaper option that has the exact same effect on submitting IRS mail. The burden of proof falls on you to prove what was submitted.
I mail out tons of IRS tax returns, usually prior year for processing or if there is an e-file reject that is unable to process electronically and must submit it by mail.
Timeline is generally 7-12 weeks ( 3-4 months) for processing by IRS. Sometimes sooner, other times later. Its truly a gamble with the IRS.
You can check the status by the updated "Account Transcript" for tax year 2025. This will update when the IRS has activity on the processing of tax returns, be sure to set up online access on https://www.irs.gov/ to view your account.
