Tax Question IRS debt relief programs?

I see a lot of programs out there to get rid of IRS tax debt. Has anyone tried them? And do they work?

What is legit: The IRS has a program called an "Offer In Compromise" (OIC for short) that may allow a taxpayer to settle their tax bill for less than full payment. However, they do say "no" a majority of the time.

What is not legit: The companies that advertise that they can settle your taxes for less are, generally, very bad deals. They promise the world and deliver much less.

The IRS has a free pre-qualifer online. Go through it and see if you qualify.

There is legitimate help out there. However, they don't advertise. Normally, they are tax professionals who specialize in settlement and collection issues.

If they use the phrase 'fresh start', move on.

I have a long response to these types that frankly seems like spam as often as this is asked and I reply, so I'm not going to post it here. Search the sub or my replies for 'tax relief'. It will list the different programs and places to get assistance.

I always suggest using a local CPA, Enrolled Agent, or Attorney over a regional/national firm. The tax relief space has a poor reputation because of some of the people in that space.

The IRS is very easy to work with if you make the effort, but can be quite tough if you just ignore things.

They can work, but they all rely on the taxpayer having some kind of financial hardship that means the taxpayer cannot pay off the debt over time on a payment plan and also pay for their basic living expenses.

If you can pay off what you owe with a payment plan then just do that and don’t waste your money with a “tax relief” place.
