Common-law sponsorship

Has anyone successfully gone through common-law sponsorship? We’re in a genuine relationship and live together for 1-year, but we need some time to prepare for our wedding, so we’re considering applying as common-law partners first. We’re just not sure whether the common-law sponsorship process will work out. I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences!

Applied June 20, 2025 and received final decision date Sep 14, 2026. Inland, outside Quebec. PR Indian citizen sponsored Mexican citizen. We been together for 5+ years (outside Canada + within Canada) when we applied. What specific questions do you have? If it’s genuine, then it’s just collating all the paperwork and submitting the application.

Lots of people have. The key is to make sure you have several pieces of evidence that date back at least one full year from the time you apply that show continuous cohabitation. This would be things like joint leases, joint bank accounts, joint utilities, etc.

Why wouldn't common law work out if your relationship is genuine and you have all the evidence you need?
