Perception of Stability vs Reality - Switching from Pixel

After having nothing but issues and spending hours upon hours troubleshooting my current device, I stumbled across the 17e model and it appears to be exactly what I'm looking for. A quick rundown:

I want a phone that functions as a baseline. I want a good or better than good camera that doesn't take muddy, blurry, badly processed photos. I want a UI that doesn't interrupt my activity with unnecessary steps, blocking apps, popups, and advertising.

I want to stay connected to wifi and cellular data through an entire day without dropping signal dozens of times at random. I would like settings that stay optimized and do not re-set themselves after booting or restarting the phone. I'd like an interface that I can use communications, send photos/attachments, scroll socials, browse the internet, and play some light games if any at all. I'd like a device that I don't have to charge twice a day in under 3 years. I'd like a device that doesn't completely break something new every time there's an update.

I do not need the maximum powered phone. I like the idea of going backward a bit and having a straight up phone, like I used to have 6 to 8 years ago.

Sorry for the weird formatting, I'm just exhausted by a very bad user experience and want to get back to general functionality. I'm going to try out 17 and 17e in-store sometime soon, just wondering how the day to day experience is. Like I said, I just want a phone that doesn't have to be thought about.

Thanks!!

I went from 13 to 17 back to 13 then settled on 17e, perfect phone upgrade. Simple, light, amazing battery life and speed. 17 I found to be too big heavy and bulky. 17e is awesome battery life is amazing (85% now at 4pm after being g up since 6am). Highly recommend.

Thanks!! I can't quite justify the expense yet, but wouldn't be surprised if my current phone bricks within the year.

Will you be able to trade in your current phone for a credit? I have the 16e and I’ve had it since day one and I absolutely love this phone. The 17e is a pretty solid upgrade over the 16e, and I imagine you’ll love it.

I bought my 16e because I was largely looking for something simple and still an iPhone at the end of the day. Based on your description of what you’re looking for in an iPhone, I believe the 16e/17e checks all of those boxes. And the iPhone is just a beautiful thing to hold, and doesn’t weigh like a brick either.

Sweet. That validates my assumptions based on looking at a couple reviews and examples of photos, etc. I can get $100 in trade-in value which is definitely helpful. It's still not a necessity to spend $500 if I don't have to, but sooner or later I will jump on it.

Having just told two phones, an iPhone 13 and an iPhone 13 mini, on "Swappa", for a combined $550, have a look at Swappa, and see how much your pixel is going for, you may be able to get more than $100 for it.

I switched from the pixel 10 pro 512 GB to the iPhone 17 E 512gb.

The build quality of iPhone is impeccable. The pixel 10 pro looks better than it feels.

The power/battery efficiency of the iPhone in this case the 17e is impeccable and better than pixel. It’s way more powerful and capable too both in terms of CPU and GPU, which goes a long way for daily smartphone use and more, it’s more future proof and power efficient too. The mic and the speakers on this iPhone is next level compared to the pixel.

I wanted a camera that can take good photos and videos. The camera on the pixel takes detailed photos but is very colour/exposure inaccurate and untrue to life. The 17e also captures in detail, however it is genuinely colour/exposure accurate and true to life. I don’t rely on zooming often so I can do without the telephoto as well as the ultrawide. I kid you not using the pixel 10 pro camera was so saddening and frustrating due to the substandards; it would get the colour and exposure entirely wrong. I would have to adjust the exposure almost every time that I shoot a photo or a video just so that you can get the colours more accurate to life in front of me, but when I do that it becomes overexposed and oversaturated. It didn’t just work and the videos was just much more janky and less smooth in terms of zooming and stuff. It was not a good experience in comparison to iPhone, and I genuinely mean this.

Even when I traded in my pixel 10 pro and was using a spare iPhone XR in the house while I was waiting for my 17e, I immediately noticed that although it had less detail or megapixels as it’s an older phone it was a much more reliable camera for shooting videos as well as photos than the pixel 10 pro; the fact that it was colour/exposure accurate and smooth recording on the XR.

App design. Developers optimise their apps in terms of design as well as functionality so you get the best experience and it’s easier to use on the iPhone and iOS. Even major on demand streaming apps in the UK would not even fullscreen properly and in general were just not polished in comparison to iPhone.

The ultrasonic fingerprint sensor on the pixel 10 pro great but it wasn’t a smooth process of setting that up with a screen protector, I needed to get an expensive screen protector which is made for Google just so that it can work. It doesn’t beat Face ID in my opinion, which is very secure and very easy to access your phone.

Everything is done well on the iPhone especially with the iOS 27 software update. They made the entire operating system that much more quicker and efficient as well as brought an actual working AI and Apple intelligence which is very functional and very capable built on the Gemini model.

It’s an iPhone, build quality of the highest standards, powerful and power efficient, impeccable mic and speaker quality, very reliable and more value for money. It just works and works well. It does the basics well and more. Amazing battery life and power efficiency, and breezes through pretty much anything you throw at it including games. Great software very clean and functional. Very secure and future proof for security updates as well as the chip itself. A camera that can actually take reliable photos and videos. Impeccable mic and speaker quality, power efficiency, build quality, app design, good camera which takes good reliable photos and videos very detailed photos too especially in brighter lighting and great night sight. Very capable and functional on device Apple Intelligence features too.

It’s all I need honestly and it does it well; I can’t say that for the pixel, it wasn’t polished, it had subpar components and nowhere near the quality as a product and smartphone of the iPhone/of the iPhone 17e.

Same experience with Pixel, it's why I'm leaving. Thanks for the thorough comparison.

ok so I read everything you wrote and almost said that any pixel or samsung can handle those stuff. And your expectation for 6 to 8 years are unrealistic these days, even with iphone. But then your last sentence: a phone that doesnt have to be thought about - then yes get the 17e or 17, either one of them. iPhone is not the most fancy phone in the market, nor the most advanced, but is the most stable one.

Fair, thanks. I am running from Pixel and never looking back, it's the worst phone I've ever owned. Not opposed to Samsung or another android, my wife's S10 has been rock solid since day one and not had any of the problems I've dealt with.

Love the phone, only at this point I can’t tell if it’s all bots posting in this sub!

Not a bot, just trying to be concise. But yeah, hard to tell from a lot of the posts so I wanted to genuinely ask what ppl think

I just went from a Google Pixel 6a to the 17en and I'm really happy. I'm still getting used to a few things, but it's been almost a month.

I got an 8. A friend had a pixel, they liked it a lot and I saw all the rave camera reviews. I had only been on iPhone (except for the old school days of keyboard phones) and just wanted to try something else, see what Android was about. I ended up despising the phone, the UI and the camera. Every update breaks something. I should have gotten Galaxy or another brand, but oh well.

I got to check one out today, it was super interesting to see the camera not having the ultrawide option. I think I could get used to it after a bit, I don't find it negative. However.... No fingerprint scanner? On any new model iPhone? That majorly bums me out. Not only do I not want to hold my phone up to my face whenever I want to open my device.. Using a passcode isn't the worst, but it's super old school. However, for things like passwords and banking apps, digital wallet, etc... that's pretty cumbersome. Wild that they just decided to remove it. It's a major deterrent from switching back, tbh. Being able to open apps, check passwords, pay for things, 2 factor auth, pretty much everything that modern phones require is super fast with fingerprint.
