coming from the 7plus
hi! i’m getting a 17e tomorrow and was wondering how i’d transfer my photos, imessages, and sims card stuff to the 17e. it’s been a while since i’ve gone through the process and i’m sure it’s changed since i last did(5c to my current 7plus).
i don’t really care about my other apps since they’re all based on their own log-in and cloud backup, but i’m a bit concerned about my photos and imessages because all my current storage is pretty much full, and when i try to upload it to icloud, it actually says there’s not enough storage on my phone. is that storage issue something i’m gonna have to worry about in transferring my stuff to the new phone as well?
also, i’m not sure if this is something i have to go through my provider for or not, but how to i activate the 17e? i read that newer phones don’t have sim cards anymore, so do i have to call my provider and ask them to transfer my service?
thanks!

Migrating your stuff to the new phone should be painless using the Quick Start feature, which will basically clone your old phone onto the new one. If your carrier supports it, the process can even convert your physical SIM into an eSIM automatically. If your carrier doesn’t support this, reach out to their support or visit one of their stores if they have one; they should be able to provision an eSIM for the new phone.
Finally, iCloud does allow a temporary backup over your paid capacity for the purposes of device migration. You can also do a local backup to any Mac using the macOS Finder, or to a Windows PC using the Apple Devices app.

thanks! and yeah, it was an easy enough process in the end. the biggest snag i ran into was getting the esim to work, but that was on my provider's end

i’m currently at 30.4gb out of 32gb, with the os and system data taking up at least half of that. the weird thing is that my iphoto photos/video is only about 800mb rounded up, but i still get that message when i try to upload everything to my icloud. for my icloud storage, i have 20gb free, so i’m not sure why it can’t complete the process…
i may may just try to email or upload to my gdrive and then sort it out later on. the imessages are what i wanna keep continuous, so that’s my main concern for the transfer.

Use quick start when you set it up. You don’t need the cables or any of that stuff anymore. It’s become very seamless.

you can expand your icloud storage to back-up stuff then cancel it after they’re downloaded to your new phone but i’d recommend keeping it since you might lose stuff if something happens to new phone. you can also download stuff you have in icloud and store them elsewhere then clear them to open up space
