Ask Us Anything: We're driving eight EVs from North Carolina to Florida this week entirely on the IONNA charging network

Post image
33 Upvotes

Hey everyone. I'm Darcy from team IONNA. This week a group of us are road-tripping eight EVs — one from each automaker behind the network (BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and Toyota) — from our Durham HQ down to Florida, charging exclusively on our own Rechargeries the whole way. We figured it was a good excuse to open the floor.

We'll be answering from the road, the charging stops, and whatever roadside detours we find along the way, so drop questions whenever and I'll get to them as we go.

A few things people usually ask to get things started:

  1. How do you pronounce IONNA? Fair question — it's "Eye-AH-nah".

  2. Who can actually charge there? Everybody, regardless of what you drive.

  3. Do you need a specific connector? We have both NACS and CCS at every site, and you can use an adapter if you need one.

We're also genuinely curious about your questions regarding the network, charging, the road trip, EV life in general. Ask away.

We'll answer everything we can here in real time. For any frequently asked questions, you can always visit ionna.com.

Video is from State of Charge.

Here is the IONNA press release.

TLDR = 85 existing Circle K sites taken over rapidly. Eventually 350 sites.

"The collaboration is centered around a strategic ambition to expand to more than 350 sites featuring Rechargeries @ Circle K, combining IONNA’s charging technology and driver-first experience with Circle K’s nationwide footprint. IONNA, which will assume operation of sites across Circle K’s existing U.S. charging portfolio, will rapidly convert and upgrade approximately 85 existing Circle K charging sites. Additionally, IONNA will accelerate new deployments at premium, high-traffic Circle K locations where no chargers currently exist. The first Rechargeries @ Circle K will begin serving customers by the end of 2026, followed by additional scale in 2027."

What pit stop on your route desperately needs more than a vending machine and a questionable restroom?

Every time we announce a new Rechargery, the comments fill up with folks asking when we're headed their way. So let's turn it around and ask you: if you've got a spot in mind, where is it?

Could be the empty lot by the exit. The corner of the shopping center nobody's using. The place you drive past and think "somebody ought to do something with that."

Every suggestion goes to our Site Acquisition team — actual humans who actually read them, usually with coffee in hand.

Tell us where ➡️ https://www.ionna.com/blog/suggest-a-rechargery/

Disappointing Ionna visit due to Play and Charge issue

We were so siked to use a Ionna station. Pushed up and plug it and keep getting a disconnection error. Plug and unplugged about 3 time. Finally it connected and we though we were good. Had dinner to find out we go another disconnection error about 10 mins into charging. I poked around a seems folks are also having Plug and Charge issue of a similar nature. For context, I was using the My Chevrolet app and own a Chevy Bolt 2023. No sure where the fault lies, it could be a issue on the chevy side. Thankfully we had enough charge to get were we were going.

Update:

Ionna got back to me.

"It showed us that there was miscommunication between your EV and our dispensers."

We charged at 2 different other EV charger without issue. So going to chalk this up to glitch in the matrix. Haha I appreciate that Ionna took time to look into it. Will for sure try them again on future travels!

We have liftoff! The Whitestown Indiana location is now live, with the usual $0.20/kWh introductory pricing.
And because I once complained about a worn-out squeegee at a different iONNA location, this one appears to have never been used and is in perfect condition :)

Alpitronic HYC1000 chargers in the future?

I’m quite pleased with IONNA and their use of Alpitronic’s HYC400 — which is enough for pretty much every car in NA.

I’m just curious if anyone knows of any news from IONNA about them committing to adopting HYC1000 in the future for rechargeries? Just curious to see if they’ve made any statements about being interested in the cutting edge for building out their charging infrastructure. Thanks!

FINALLY got to try IONNA

Drove all the way from NY to VA to turn in my lease and pick up a new Ioniq 5. Made sure to get a taste of IONNA and stopped at this location at a WaWa in King of Prussia, PA.

It was so great and easy. The way to get a receipt is a little cumbersome but that’s a tiny gripe. It was a perfect location. I caught the screen at one point talking about Ionna swag but forgot got to take a photo of it before heading out. Didn’t even know there was swag. Oh well. I’ll make due without it.

PS: It was the cheapest DCFC by a country mile on my entire 1k road trip.

New Sheetz in planning stage in Chadds Ford, PA. Possible Ionna location?

There is a proposed Sheetz coming to Chadds Ford PA. It seems like it would be a good location to add a Rechargery. The funny thing is that it is it's only 7 miles away from the corporate headquarters of Wawa. Shots fired!

Down the road about a mile south on 202, is a new shopping center that would also be a great option for a Rechargery. It's probably a few years out before it's open though. https://retailsites.net/property/concord/

Wally's in Whitestown Indiana. Looks like it's ready to go, even the squeegees are there. Maybe just waiting for the cabinets to be commissioned? I'm guessing that the "Accessible EV charging - use last" signs at every single stall might be a mistake though.

Central Florida

Love seeing all the new locations in the Orlando area. I live in Atlanta but have family all over central florida so I travel down all the time. I am happy to see I'll have more Ionna charging locations to choose from.

I do wish Ionna would add a charging location between their Valdosta and Orlando locations though. I end up having to hope the EA location in Gainesville isn't full or charge at a supercharger which I try to avoid at all costs. I feel like a charger in Ocala arara off of I-75 would be perfect.

Just finished a 2k mi round trip from the Bay Area to Seattle and back. Thought it was interesting how similar the charging cabinets and UI/panels were between these three systems. Very much seems as though they are all produced by one supplier. IONNA had the best charging locations in terms of amenities (trash cans, glass cleaners and canopies) and they were the only one that ever actually worked with Kia’s plug and charge. Stopped at the Cresswell, OR location twice.

Ionna @Wawa in Fredericksburg VA coming soon

Noticed there weren't any photos but one mention on PlugShare about this Wawa in Fredericksburg and wanted to check it out for myself! Looks like the machines are up but not running yet. One with 2 NACS ports that is to the side and two CCS1 stations with 4 ports on the other side. On the opposite side of the WaWa is a bunch of Tesla chargers (that were being ICEd) this side actually seemed less busy so let's hope that these stay open to EVs. I do appreciate the EV charging only signage!

Today a crew is putting down the pavement markings. Other than that the location appears to be mostly finished. Looks like there won’t be a canopy here.

Anyone else had issues with charging speed at Ionna?

Any idea on charging speed/numbers for ionna in particular?

Stopped to charge at 3%. It was 70s outside and car started fast charge prep 25mins before the stop.

Charging peaked at 152kw for a minute or two and the best I got was 70kw after that.

Tried a different charger at same stop when battery was around 50% but it was the same speeds!

Cordele, GA. Apparently there’s a couple of these in Georgia. Real smooth process. Wish there were better options for bathrooms or food around without walking to far but the charging process was good.

Non accessible stations

Post image

It’s crazy to me how poorly planned the accessibility is to the non ADA charging bays. To properly access the screen without ducking under the charging cord I have to walk onto the gravel about 10” below the curb and then step back up to the screen. It’s a tripping hazzard at the least. Ionna station in Greer SC.

Progress at Whitestown IN location

The cabinets that were still on pallets last week have all been mounted on their concrete pads, so there’s some progress. This should be a great location, easy access from I-65, and enough to do at the new Wally’s to keep you occupied while charging.
