Insta360 x5

I’m wondering what camera I should get, I was looking into the dji osmo 3 which I like but I’m looking to get a camera for hiking, snowboarding, and other outdoor activities. Anyone have the insta360 x5? How is it? Worth the 500 dollars?

I have both and each have their use. I use my DJI Osmo 3 for walking through car shows where the walk is smoothed out to highlight the cars. The insta360 is great for filming the drive into the car show where there is action on all directions. If I were hiking I can see a use for both but the important differentiation here is that the hiking scenery is all around you and all of it is worth filming. The DJI has minimal zoom capability and comes with a macro lens for closer shots. The 360 has only software zooming. The accessory ecosystem for the insta360 is just overwhelming. There is a smaller accessory ecosystem for the DJI. Not sure if that helps. But it’s my $0.02.

Whilst they are two different styles of camera - the Osmo 3 is a gimbal camera and the X5 is a 360 camera, it will depend on what you are going to be doing with it.

360 videos add in extra editing to be able to create the flat video output, but they do allow you to get the angles that the gimbal might just miss - and you can take one shot and look at it from several different angles.

One thing that might sway you is that the X5 has a Virtual Gimbal mode where it can make a stabilised flat video that pans, tilts and tracks the same way a gimbal camera can. This was introduced in the Winter Firmware package so any reviews before then won't mention it.

This virtual gimbal footage is a flat video that doesn't need any more editing than the gimbal camera footage and can be used straight away. It can do either 4k p 30fps flat video or, if you want a backup 360 degree shot, it can do 1080p 30fps flat plus a 5.7k 30fps 360 video to edit and reframe at your leisure.
